Guest guest
, I wanted a hip resurfacing, but due to my age dr wouldn't do it (61), they try to do the resurfacing on younger people because THR do not last that long on some of us. Yes the pain pre-op is horrible - certainly was for me - couldn't sleep, woke up if I moved, etc., and during the day I struggled, however I didn't have kids - it must be miserable for you. My surgeon didn't cement mine in just in case it needs replacing. I wish you luck ann question about THR Hi..i am new to this group..usually on the FAI group..i am having a surgical dislocation with Dr. millis in boston on monday the 15th but after seeing him yesterday for a final consult, it looks like he wont do the whole surgery..just trim the bone b/c i've got almost no cartilidge left (significant degeneration since the end of October), have multiple cysts and ?holes in the hip bone?...he basically said that b/c of my age (39) he's trying to prolong a THR and he hopes this will give me a few years but was also upfront in saying that if the pain isnt much better within a few months post-op than i need a THR this spring...and then there's the other hip...i'm in so much pain and have a baby, toddler and two teenagers so i'm having a hard time day to day and taking percocet and feldene is killing my stomache...does my story sound familiar? I'm so tired of everyone around me telling me to "just get a hip replacement...its no big deal...80 year olds do it so what is the problem?" ....sorry, just venting but am greatful that such a surgery is available and so widely done...cant imagine living like this for another 50 years! Thanks for listening
Guest guest
, at your young and active age with children and so much of your life yet to live, why would you not be researching your options? If you are a candidate, a hip resurfacing would be a wonderful way for you to start living normal again. Find a surgeon in your area that does this procedure and schedule a consultation. Do yourself and your children a big favor. You never know unless you ask. Guest guest
Ann, Thanks for the response!~ I'm embarrassed to ask this but is hip resurfacing what they are doing to me in five days? I get all the terms messed up! I appreciate your thoughts and your statement re: replacements not being a " sure thing " when you are younger...so tired of well-meaning friends getting so disgusted that i dont " just get a hip replacement " b/c its so easy....!! > > , I wanted a hip resurfacing, but due to my age dr wouldn't do it (61), they try to do the resurfacing on younger people because THR do not last that long on some of us. Guest guest
Hi I was 37 when I had both my hips resurfaced (two years ago) and I haven't looked back, I am active and can do absolutely everything, recovery was quick and straightforward. I think you should try and get a second opinion, I can give you the names of some Dr's who will give you a free email consultation of your x-rays.... this will cost you nothing and could change your life, I too remember the awful quality of life I had pre-op, at our age we are too young for thr but resurfacing is designed for younger active people, it can give you your life back. If I can help in any way please do not hesitate to ask, I can put you in touch with people in US who can direct you to experienced resurfacing surgeons.... It is vital you talk to an experienced resurfacing surgeon, unfortunately the US is very behind the rest of the world and there are still many doctors giving incomplete or out dated information, Life can be better than this, reseach costs you nothing and again it can give you your life back! Guest guest
geez , I don't know - even thought I went in pretty pink (hoping for a resurface) to my appointment I didn't fool my surgeon - I too had many, many cysts and large bone spurs - I'm thrilled I got it done and being they are the doctors you hope that you have a good one and that your body can heal. Doctors aren't god, but they are all we have. ann question about THR> > > Hi..i am new to this group..usually on the FAI group..i am having a > surgical dislocation with Dr. millis in boston on monday the 15th > but after seeing him yesterday for a final consult, it looks like he > wont do the whole surgery..just trim the bone b/c i've got almost no > cartilidge left (significant degeneration since the end of October), > have multiple cysts and ?holes in the hip bone?...he basically said > that b/c of my age (39) he's trying to prolong a THR and he hopes > this will give me a few years but was also upfront in saying that if > the pain isnt much better within a few months post-op than i need a > THR this spring...and then there's the other hip...i'm in so much > pain and have a baby, toddler and two teenagers so i'm having a hard > time day to day and taking percocet and feldene is killing my > stomache...does my story sound familiar? Guest guest
Hi , I was 39 when I had my first hip put in. It gave me my life back, allowed me to be a better mother, and wife, and let me enjoy life. Of course you need to think about what happens when that hip wears out. I got 12 years out of mine, and doctors say I got a good run out of it, although initially I was told it should last 30 years. My revision isn't much chop. While over 90% of patients will say their initial THR is successful the numbers aren't so good for revisions. 60% of people having revisions are unhappy with the results. Looking back I would still have the initial surgery, but just reminding you of the cost of having a THR young. Guest guest
Hi It sounds like you are having arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), this is where they try and tidy up what is going on in there. It can help put off replacement for some time if successful. I hope it works for you. Resurfacing is a bone conserving type of replacement, look at this x- ray, it shows both thr and resurfacing http://www.thehipclinic.co.uk/gallery/BHRoneside.JPG I had arthroscopy before my resurfacings, it wasn't successful for me but is an excellent diagnostic tool that shows the surgeon the true state of the hip joint. Guest guest
Sensitivity to metals does not have the same effect when the metal is inside the body. It is mostly a topical allergy that we have. Most of us with metal allergys have or have had metal fillings in our teeth with no ill effects. All hip replacement devices have some components of metal in them or on them. No ill effects from metal alloys have been reported for hip resurfacing that I am aware of in the last ten years. > > I also couldn't have a hip resurfacing because of the materials ... Guest guest
Hi -If you're not absolutely set on using the doctor you have now, at your age you may be interested in resurfacing. It can be checked out by googleing BHR-resurfacing, or by going to the group surfacehippy. The company making the device approved in the US has a doctor locator. It uses a ball that doesn't cut away as much bone from the femur as does a THR, and uses a large diameter ball with a metal on metal bearing surface. I had a bilateral in October, the 17th & the 31st, & am very happy so far. Worth looking into at your age. I am 45 years old & want to resume normal activity, & from my research the resurfacing has fewer long term restrictions than a traditional THR. It sounds like your doctor is doing a surgical intervention which requires no prosthetic device. Neither THR nor resurfacing. Give resurfacing a try. In my opinion this doctor is no in the loop regarding what is new & happening in total hips these days. The THR I would have gotten is said to be have 20-30 year usable life. Ceramic head in a titanium socket. Get more opinions till you find a doc who is well regarded & confident in the work & the device. Feel free to write w/questions. Guest guest
I was also going to reply to this one but I let it go the first time around. The same or very similar base metals are used in both replacement and resurface. Mine is made of chromium cobalt and I was told it’s one of the more common metals used. Each manufacturer has their own “special” recipe for the metal but that shouldn’t affect allergies too much. If necessary your allergist can request a sample of the metal to test you with.
