Guest guest
well done, glad you are home and okay - hip restrictions aren't as bad as I thought - really to me the important thing is not breaking the 90 degree rule - which makes it a little difficult getting off the toilet and out of a chair - in bed the only thing is you must have a pillow between your legs (other than 90 degree rule) it really isn't difficult. I'm 4 weeks from surgery and I can only just lie on the operated side which isn't that comfortable, but expect to be better in another week. I pick up stuff off the floor by sticking my leg out of the back not breaking the rules, but I have wonderful balance. You will find every day is a huge jump in your abilities - the stiffness has mostly gone for me, but I'm having knee problems, not sure why, perhaps I'm not walking the same way (go figure). You'll soon be walking, and talking and doing. Shame, last night we had 4" of snow so that's going to curb my activities a bit, but it should melt this week-end. Very cold too so I don't give a damn about being inside LOL good luck ann home from hospital after total hip Hi everyone - I'm home from the hospital. I had my right THR done last Friday morning. I lost waaay more blood thqan they wanted me too, so had to spend a few extra days getting blood transfusions. I am up in a chair in the living room. I hope I can remember all of the "hip precaution rules" when it comes time to get comfortable in a bed. Guest guest
Hi Beth Glad your home and praying for a good recovery FAST. My knee and leg are still swelled but am off all walking aids. The copays are killing my savings, All this caused by a fall on a sidewalk that still isn't fixed. Wishing I would of gotten a police report when it happened a year and half ago. I went yesterday and talked to homeowner and she remembered me falling and I am hoping that her insurance will pay my copays back to me. My advise to anyone now is if you fall due to someone negligance always get a police report done at the time, as it can result in damages at a later date. I don't like the idea of sueing someone. If I would of called the police then, the people would of fixed the sidewalk then and no one else could of had the chance of falling on it again. And I would of had proof of the accident and my bills would be paid. Oh well live and learn. I may not have gray hairs yet but I sure am getting wisdom>LOL. Take it easy and watch the Ice when you go out. From another Michigander in debPrison_Nurse_2 <bwills91@...> wrote: Hi everyone - I'm home from the hospital. Guest guest
Beth . . . I'm glad you are home and your surgery is behind you. Sorry you lost so much blood. Did the transfusions make you sick in anyway? The reason I ask is because at the class I attended, the surgical nurse told us transfusions can mess up one's system. I'm just wondering if you felt ill or strange in any way, having had them. I don't really know what she meant by her statement, I should have asked. Maybe what she meant is they are hard on the system. Did they say anything to you about them? You take care of yourself and you'll be better than new soon. Guest guest
Gee I didn't need any transfusions but since I had donated two pints of blood before surgery they gave it back to me and I didn't feel a thing. It didn't mess me u[ or anything. Dr. said it would give me more energy but I didn't notice a difference from that time and the second time when I didn't donate blood and didn't get any. Guest guest
Way ta' go, Beth! Yeah, you'll find ways to get comfortable, and as you heal and the pain subsides, you'll get back to your usual comfortable ways of sitting and lying. Do what they tell you, though, in physical therapy, and don't cut corners--best way to the speediest recovery. --Arthur --- Prison_Nurse_2 <bwills91@...> wrote: > Hi everyone - I'm home from the hospital. Guest guest
Hi Lindy Lou - Thank you for the kind words. The transfusion were a God send They did not make me feel badly at all. My OS said that a 300 cc blood loss during a THR is "expected". I lost over 1100. So,everytime I tried to get up, I passed out out vomited and got cold and clammy. The 2 units of blood that i got fixed that! So now that I am home, I can get about a bit with my walker, It doesn't hurt to put weight onthe operative side but the leg is very wobbly and I know that it wouldn't hold me right now/ It's a very strange feeling. I'm having a heck of a time getting comfortable in bed. I am such a side sleeper! I know that I shoud be able to put a couple of pillows between my knees and turn up on my non-operative side. But, I'm scared to try. Late this afternoon I am to have a visit from a physical therapist, The surgeon wrote orders for home PT for 3 weeks. They are going to take this huge dressing off my bum so that I can shower too. That will be great! I am scheduled to get my staples out on the 17th. Guest guest
Beth, Having gone through 4 hip surgeries (all on my left side) I am a pro at turning over onto my side in bed. I put the pillow(s) between my legs, squeeze them together and grab onto the side of the bed to get me over. The first few times will be difficult but the muscles will get strong quickly if you continue to do it. I slept on my side exclusively at the hospital. I am usually a tummy or side sleeper, so if I was forced to stay on my back it would be impossible for me to relax enough to sleep. If you are having trouble sleeping try taking 1-2 benedryl. That's what they give at the hospitals here. All you have to do is ask for it. This last time I was on lorazapam for anxiety attacks and I had the best sleep I've ever had for a month or two after the surgery. They sent me home w/ this waterproof bandaging that I could put on if I wanted to shower. It was wonderful! Once I got my staples out I was allowed to shower . . . and boy, did I ever enjoy that after all the bird baths I had to take in the past. Pat I'm having a heck of a time getting comfortable in bed. I am such a side sleeper!

Guest guest
boy Pat, I know I was lucky, my surgeon allowed me to shower in hospital 4 days post-op - the nurses couldn't believe it but all felt it cut down on infections. I had my staples out at 9 days and have been showering at home ever since. I'm just 4 weeks post op and starting to lie on the operated side and I like you used the same technique to turn over - I'm so much happier now I can sleep on my right side - it can only get better. ann Re: home from hospital after total hip Beth, Having gone through 4 hip surgeries (all on my left side) I am a pro at turning over onto my side in bed. Guest guest
i thought i heard somewhere that they give a patient coumidin beforehand. that's scary. no wonder a person loses so much blood during surgery. the risks for clots must be higher than bleeding to death to warrent such a thing.
