Guest guest
Hi All, Shirley here from Southend-On-sea in essex (england). I had a full knee replacement in July. Im afraid its been a failure as yet - I am still on crutches & housebound. The knee gives way several times a day, and is still very painful, with a 'vice like' feeling around the knee! Its been good to read some of your messages!! Shirl p.s. iron tablets? - always take them with Vit C, orange juice etc & you'll have no tummy troubles at all!! Guest guest
Thanks for the tip on the iron, Shirley. I am so very sorry to hear your recovery is slow. What does your surgeon say? Vice-like feeling? Do you think it could be scar tissue? Donnalos_shirl <essexshirl@...> wrote: Hi All,Shirley here from Southend-On-sea in essex (england). I had a full knee replacement in July. Guest guest
Hi Shirl, I always tell my clients that you need vit c to help absorb the iron. Fresh parsley in the meals and fresh green leafy vegies are both excellent sources of iron and vit c at the same time. Seems nature does know best. Guest guest
Hi there Shirl, What has your dr. said? Have you been having ongoing physical therapy? I had complications with my TKR but the symptoms you have I had much earlier on. As for the vice like feeling, some days I still feel that and that's exactly how I describe it. I am 2 years post op. Guest guest
You have to watch the green leafy vegetables if you're taking Coumadin. My understanding is that Coumadin interferes with the vitamin k clotting agents and thus " thins " the blood. Green leafy vegetables are one of the best sources of vitakim k, so loading up on them could defeat the Coumadin. --Arthur --- Margaret <zztinau@...> wrote: > Hi Shirl, > > I always tell my clients that you need vit c to help > absorb the iron. Guest guest
Yes Arthur, Some of my clients have to restrict their green leafy vegetables because of that. I wonder if they eat more of the green leafy vegies if they would need to take " coumadin " - I presume a blood thinner? I remember a doctor talking on the TV one day complaining how some of our Vietnamese migrants, once they find out they have diabeties start using " alternative " medicine - usually eating the vegetable bitter melon. I know the argument about standardised doses etc, but I often think that in the future doctors will try special foods before reaching for their script pads. I hope so anyway. Guest guest
Hallo Joyce & Donna, My surgeon keeps banging on about it being a 'technically perfect FKR'. I managed to get a copy of the letter sent to my GP which says I had 'complex regional pain syndrome' & soft tissue damage. I got told I have their sympathy, but theres nothing they can do - they just hope things will get better in time. Had some physio (2 sessions - just walking back & forth in the parallel bars), do 6 lots of exercises 4 times a day thats it, oh a 6 lots of hydrotherapy. They have been mentioning a re-do, taking the joint out & having another try - I said you're not touching me again! Am feeling somewhat touchy about the whole thing, am seeing surgoen again tomorrow!! Shirl p.s. 2 years on for the vice like??? blimey - thats really chuffed me off!! > Hi there Shirl, > > What has your dr. said? Have you been having ongoing physical therapy? Guest guest
Hey Shirl, It might be technically perfect but it is not humanly perfect. You have to live with this on a day-to-day basis and can't possibly do that the way you are right now. I, for one, feel that physical therapy is a necessity. You probably would be doing better now if you had regular ongoing therapy. You can exercise a lot like you do but in therapy they will do things for you that stretch, loosen, etc. All those things will prevent excessive scar tissue. I had PT for 6 months, 3 times a week. Of course, my situation was a little unusual in that 3 days after surgery I developed a blood clot. I could not even get out of bed for 1 week and I was in the hospital for a week and then transported to rehab facility where I stayed another 10 days. End result is I have scar tissue which prevents me from having a range of motion any greater than 95. But it honestly took me 6 months of pt to even get there. You see, we are not all textbook cases. I have no pain anymore but getting in and out of the car is difficult at 5'11"!! I walk perfectly. I just don't have that ROM that is comfortable. I don't know if I would want a re-do. In my opinion I would get a second opinion on that one. I hope your dr. appt. goes well and you get some much needed answers. Good luck and regards, Joy -- Hallo from new member> > Hi All,> Shirley here from Southend-On-sea in essex (england). I had a full > knee replacement in July. Guest guest
Hi Joyce, thanks for the reply!! Id love more PT but my physio doesnt seem to be interested! The apt with the surgeon went okay - 'just carry on exercising & see pain clinic consultant'. Im only 5'62, but I have terrible trouble getting in & out of the car - most of southend have seen my underwear (eat yr heart out bridget jones!), so I can only guess the probs you have (my advice - try not to wear a skirt!) Guest guest
Shirl, I read a bit about complex regional pain syndrome. It was very technical, but reminds me of the way Alan described his condition of 40 years -- the nuerons, nerve endings, etc. Alan was going back in for manipulation for scar tissue. But hopefully he will be back to the site and we'll be a getting a good report soon. How did things go witht the surgeon? Warm regards, Donnalos_shirl <essexshirl@...> wrote: Hallo Joyce & Donna,My surgeon keeps banging on about it being a 'technically perfect FKR'. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Ive started the think they say CRPS when they really dont have a clue whats happening!! Surgeon says carry on wioth exercise & do whatever pain clinic consult says! see him again in 3 mnths!! However my knee is getting easier, apart from the vice like feeling!! so Im feeling more positive! Shirl > Shirl, > > I read a bit about complex regional pain syndrome. Guest guest
I don't know Lindy Lou, I usually try to encourage people to use the foods with high vitamin C and iron. Nature seems to know what to put together. Green leafy vegetables, kiwi fruits, pawpaw are all readily available here and have less side effects than pills.
