I would not think it necessary, unless you already have one. It will

not teach you to use your muscles; but would be a big help the first

week or so. I would highly recommend building a platform under your

favorite chair prior to surgery, so you do not side too low, and you

will definitely need a raised commode seat with armrests to help you

safely get on/off the commode.

My husband placed cement blocks under my favorite sofa. Also he placed plywood under the cushions so it wouldn't be too soft. It worked fine. Be sure and not sit in a chair with no arms, as you will need arms to help you get up for awhile.
