A friend of mine has a large collection of hip joints (all unused from a closed

hospital), she uses them as door stops etc and I think they'd make a great

walking stick

handles, or what about a novel door knocker! Mounted onto a wooden plinth, what

Just for the heck of it, I looked this up in the CRC Handbook, the

metals commonly used for hip joints melt in the range of 1495 to 1857

degrees C and from what info I could find on the Internet it seems

crematory temperatures range from 750-1150 degrees C (1400-2100

degrees F) Titanium in a powder form is used in fireworks, but I

don't think it would ignite as a solid alloy form in an implant. So

it seems the metal parts would survive pretty much intact; I don't

know what the funeral home would do with them, however.

Would make a good doorstop, paperweight or what-have-you. You could

have it auctioned on E-bay with the proceeds to the Arthritis

Foundation.

Does anyone ever set off the alarms at the airport? I have a teflon-coated rod in my right leg (not the one needing the hip replacement). Sets it off all the time. I ALWAYS get pulled aside for a more thorough search. When I go to the doc's the next time, I'm going to have him give me a card that states there is a metal artificial joint.

I've heard the cards don't help because they are so generic. Anyone can present a card, so they'd still have to "wand" you. I think it is a small price to pay for a joint replacement that has given you a better life.

I did suggest to my OS that perhaps the medical people need to advocate a more personal card with your name and picture on it (like our drivers licenses or passports) that can be more useful to present to airport security. He said, believe it or not, they are looking into that.

I set off alarms every time. A card will do you no good ... anyone

could have a " card " made up. You will still set off the alarm and

be " wanded. " Just go with it with good humor and don't let it upset

you.

I travel alot for my business and even with the card have never made it thru without being stopped.

Last time I was in Atlanta, there were FIVE of us they had pulled out of the line. We all had hip replacements. Maye we shuld've started a club!!

I asked the security person what good the card did - and she said not much - that they could be easily forged.

search you. How do they know it is your hip? And how do they know

that the " card " is not a fake? With 4 replaced joints, I go through

the extra search every time. Me, who can barely lift my arms to have

the wand passed over me. I do tell them about the metal joints, and

that is were the alarm goes off. While the shady looking person

behind me goes by with no problems. I sure don't feel safer!

I'm not sure about the card--my friend, who had a TKR 2 years ago got a card from the doc stating she had metal hardware in her knee. Unless her pix is on it tho, I guess you're right--how would anyone know it wasn't a fake?

I agree ... some people have such an easy time going through security. Last winter (before either of my THRs I was "randomly selected" to be totally wanded and searched before my flight. This was when my arthritis was really bad and they made me lift and turn my legs to get under them with the wand and with a pat-down. I can imagine what they'd want to do now that I have two hip replacments. I had never set off airport buzzers before in all my years of flying!

I am glad they are taking some steps at airport safety ... just not sure they're going about it the right way ... although I don't have a clue what the right way should be.

Just hoping that my name doesn't ever end up on the "no-fly" list. Who knows where they get those names from!

I've been lurking on this board for a couple of weeks now, off and

on. I've had one THR so far (early last June) and will be going in

for my second in September. I'm 50 now, and have always been active.

I work a full-time job that can be high stress but not really active

(I work in the computer industry), I ride horses (I now - as of last

week - have two) and go to the gym almost everyday, weight train and

cardio.

I just wanted to introduce myself before I started here:

Sharon, please... try to gather your thoughts together and make

coherent sentences before you post - this is just about

unintelligible.

What I did get out of it, well... you're wrong. The cards for joint

replacements are easily couterfeited. The TSA has NO reason to

believe, looking at those cards, that they are not being mass-

produced in someone's attic, and distributed to people who WANT TO

DO US HARM!

I have NO objection to a little extra scrutiny, if it means that

terrorists have one less avenue to pursue in sneaking weapons on

board a plane.

I've travelled a few times since getting my hip replacement. It's

NOT a big deal. Much more invasive (and ticklish) pat-downs occur if

you wear an underwire bra. (Believe me - I found out the hard

way. )

Last time I was in Atlanta, there were FIVE of us they had pulled out of the line. We all had hip replacements. Maye we shuld've started a club!!

I asked the security person what good the card did - and she said not much - that they could be easily forged.
