My ortho agrees with what Mr. 's ortho said re: ceramic on

ceramic for people in their 50's and 60's. He said even though it

has only been approved for use in the U.S. for a few months, it has

been successfully used in Europe for many years. I want the " latest

and greatest " and I also want at least 30 more years on that hip! My

surgery is also scheduled for late January.

I lived in McHenry Illinois for twenty years. I moved away ten

years ago. I know most of the docs in the area. Who is your

doc. And you are right the ceramic hip is very

new. It was not available when you had yours done.

Dear Bill,

I had this operation through Medicaid per Social Security

Disability. I was

SO afraid that I was going to get a low quality of care. In my

attempts to

get some help, I had gone to Hospital and sat in the

orthopedic unit

with people that were in such sad shape in every way

imaginable. Some were

handcuffed to wheelchairs, some hadn't taken a bath in a month, some

were

mentally deranged etc etc. I just couldn't imagine that I was

going to get

that great of care but I was praying that I would. Actually, I

have been so

blessed that I got the best of care. So I told my doc that I

didn't want

" ACME " hip appliance from Looney Tunes. You know,

when I worked at Bascom

Palmer Eye Institute many years ago, the paying cataract patients got

Baush

& Lomb lens where the Medicare/Mediaid patients got ACME lens ie.

The

generic variety. So I told him I wanted Baush and Lomb

hip appliance. =-)

Anyway, the dr told me that I would get ceramic on ceramic. I

was as

shocked as I'm sure you are. I saw the x-ray a week ago

or so and it was

too perfect.

I worked with the docs in the McHenry area, I worked at Northern Illinois

Med Center for 12 years and then Woodstock Hosp for 7 years. I had

a right total hip, ceramic on ceramic, done 5 months ago here in Hannibal

Missouri, where I now live.

Gurnee was too far from me, I knew the docs in the McHenry and west

to Woodstock areas.
