Alisa Curry, RPT - Senior Physical Therapist Washington Hospital Center for Joint Replacement - Fremont , CA 510-818-6287 Alisa and Members of the Group Thanks to all for the "Welcome" to Joint Replacement Just was told that I have AVN disease (I don't know at what stage it is) in the left hip, from my MRI. (Right hip is OK) I was seen by an OS. I have had several bad falls over my lifetime, some quite recent. I am not as young as some that have needed this surgery here. This would be my first THR operation and am having many thoughts about it. This Message Board helps me to get a better understanding and what I might expect from the "Patient's" point of view, as I do not know any one firsthand that has gone through it. I now must weigh the decission whether to have my operation now (that is in the Spring) or put it off for a while longer. I do have debilitating pain perhaps not as much as many did before surgery and can tolerate it. Some days pain is worse than others, and nothing seems to help. I am realizing that there are a lot of risk factors to consider such as being left with uneven leg lengths, which in itself could lead to other problems, infection resulting from hospitalization and as to the type of material that would be best for the prothesis. I would like to think that I may have 30 good years left to live with the decision should I proceed. Thanks again for letting me join you. Carol W heidianmij@... Guest guest
Hi I am new here. My mother is having total knee replacement tomorrow and I joined to see what I can do to help her. Her surgery will be at 10:30 AM and they say they will have her up and sitting in a chair tomorrow evening. She will have OT and PT twice every day and the plan is that she will be home on Friday. She lives by herself so I don't know If I'll have to bring her home with me or stay at her apt. A friend of her's was able to be by herself after a couple of days. Really not knowing what to expect other than the fact they everything will be left for me to do and I can't depend on my brothers for help. So any suggestions on how to make this easier will be appreciated. Sharon Messenger with Voice. Make PC-to-Phone Calls to the US (and 30+ countries) for 2¢/min or less. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, Welcome to our group. I had a LTKR on March 14th, and was in the hospital for 5 days. I was up in a walker the next day. They had me sitting up in bed eating my meals the next day, but it was two days before they had me up in a chair. Some folks here write that they were negotiating stair and such before they could go home, but not so with me. Maybe because I have a one story home. They most likely will send your Mother to a extended care facility to help her learn how to get around on her own. They do this to most patients, especially those that live alone. Someone should come out to see her home to make sure it's set up okay...that's what my insurance company did for me when they brought out my walker, commode, cane, shower seat, grabber bar, etc. She should have someone check on her every day. Make sure she has plenty of foods and drinks on hand, and she can reach all of it. She needs to have lots of comfort stuff near her...her meds, a phone, things to keep her busy.... There are alot of us here who've been there and will be happy to share what's worked for us with you. Just make sure you keep her spirits up. It gets really lonely being home alone. My husband works all day so I'm home alone. My co-workers and friends called me everyday at first...to the point of driving me crazy...LOL. Now they hardly call at all. I miss that now Debi > > Hi I am new here. My mother is having total knee replacement tomorrow and I joined to see what I can do to help her. Guest guest
Debi, I have been reading your post and have seen a big improvement in your attitude. You had a rough ride, but you seem to be doing so much better. Maybe now is the time for you to phone your friends and work friends and let them know you want to hear from them. They might be afraid of bothering you when they knew what a hard time you were having. We are so lucky having these board friends to rely on. Best of luck, Kathyreynawhitehawk <ReynaWhitehawk@...> wrote: Hi Sharon,Welcome to our group.I had a LTKR on March 14th, and was in the hospital for 5 days. I was up in a walker the next day. Guest guest
Sharon: Here is a good book on the subject " Total Knee Replacement and Recovery " By Dr. Brugioni MD and Dr. Jeff Falkel Ph.D, PT. It covers the presugery and post very well. It is well layout and on of the authors (forgot which one) had a double knee replacement. So you are getting info from both sides of the event. I recommend this book to anyone considering knee, hip or any replacemnt for the pratical nature or the book. You can get it on Amazon. But you may want to run down to you local book store and get it quicker. Guest guest
This book was also recommended to me when I first came to this board, mostlikely by Don, it is a great book. Gives you a lot of insight into what to expect and question to ask. My Surgeon also says it is a great book. Best of luck to you and your Mom. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Thanks so much for your post...it means alot to me! Yes, lately I'm having a more positive attitude. I'm doing much better in my PT and seem to be almost over that hurdle I was facing. I think when my OS yelled at me last week that really set me off...it forced me to get my butt in gear. It really is up to me to have a positive recovery. I didn't go thru all this pain for nothing, not to mention my $90,000 new knee How blessed I am to have insurance to be able to do this. I know every day won't be good, but now I have many more good days than bad ones. And yes, I owe so much to my friends here that have supported me. I'd be lost without all of you!!! Guest guest
Sharon, I third this opinion! This book is my " knee Bible " . It will tell you everything from how to set up your home...to what to expect from week to week after your surgery. Lots of exercises with pictures of how to do them. I bought mine at and Noble bookstore. I highly recommend it. Debi > > > > Hi I am new here. My mother is having total knee replacement > tomorrow and I joined to see what I can do to help her. Guest guest
Thanks Debi, I had a broken ankle and was totally non-weight bearing for a couple of weeks. Hopefully mom will have it a little easier since she will be able to bear weight on the replacement knee. The surgery went well today. Only lasted about an hour then about 2 hours in recovery. Tomorrow she will be evaluated in the morning and possibly some PT and OT in the afternoon. Thursday she will have Pt and OT twice. Friday she is suppose to have OT and PT twice also and be released between 2 and 4. They say she will be able to do steps by then. I sure hope so because she has 7 steps into her apt. and I have 14 into my house. They seem to discourage extended care. Said to much risk of infection. I guess I'll just have to go day by day. Guest guest
I don't know about a knee, I had my hip replaced. But I was using a walker for a couple of weeks which meant I could not carry anything. Steps were not a problem, but it took me a few days to figure out how to get into bed. So I would not think leaving your Mom on her own would be a wise thing to do. Grace > > Thanks Debi, > > I had a broken ankle and was totally non-weight bearing for a couple of weeks. Guest guest
There are walkers in various configurations, including several types that can be used to climb stairs. Others have shelves or baskets for carrying shopping, books or whatever you want to take with you. See what's available in your area. Here are a couple of links that show photos of a number of configurations, and you can order over the Internet: http://www.a1-electric-wheelchairs.com/Rolling-s.htm http://secure.srginc.biz/search_list.php?brand=sa & strID=118?source=google The walkers with hand brakes were specifically designed to allow navigating stairs at one of the technological incubators in Israel. Guest guest
The HMO provided the walker, so it was the cheapest ( I assume). As you are only going to use it for a couple of weeks it does not seem like something one would spend too much on. Guest guest
Sherrie, I'm glad you bought the book. It's EXCELLENT!! I think I got mine about a week before my surgery, just in time to re-arrange the furniture in the house a bit, get rid of the throw rugs and stuff. But yes, the exercises would have been more helpful to me if I'd been able to do them for a few weeks prior to my surgery. My OS told me to exercise my quads, but that was it. I plan on using some of the exercises in the book...maybe even the ones with that goofy little ball....even after I stop going to my PT regular which I think is coming up pretty soon. I'll already be post op 12 weeks on next Tuesday....I can hardly believe it!! Guest guest
Sherie... No, we don't have a fitness club in the small town where we live. Our town is so small we don't even have a stop light!! The only home equipment I have is a stationery bike, and to do the exercise where you lay on your stomach and bend your knee up towards your butt (just WAIT till you do that one in PT!!!) I use a bed sheet and loop it around my ankle and lay on my bed. To do my knee knee bends while sitting, I sit on my dining room table and bend it back underneath me. I do my toe raises at the kitchen counter....you just learn to improvise with what you have. I tried to talk my OS into writing me a prescription for a jacuzzi. He said if I could get me insurance co. to pay for it he'd be more than happy to write it up! My insurance company is awesome, one of the top five in the nation...but still I'm not sure if they'd foot the bill for that...LOL... Oh yea, I had 16 in home PT visits starting right when I got home from the hospital. I was in the hospital for 5 days. Then I had a slight problem with my ROM and had to have a manipulation, and then started out patient PT. I just had my 13th session with that today. I have 3 more of those next week and I'm done. My OS is asking for a few more PT visits though. But I need to wait and see what my insurance says cause we sure can't afford to pay for PT. Not when I'm on disabilty right now. But the PT is SO important, I sure found that out the hard way!!! I have to admit, I am so lax on it at home...I know I need to do it more on my own, and I worry I won't after my visits are up. But I have come so far now and am so proud of myself. Guest guest
Deb sounds like you have good insusrance I am on HMO so I dont know how well that would go.A friend of mine got a jacuzzi whin she had a hip repaced the insurance did not pay for it but because she had a perscript from Doc she got to count it off her taxes as a medical expense at the end of the year. I know what you mean about money I have been off for 10 months and not on disability. sherreireynawhitehawk <ReynaWhitehawk@...> wrote: Sherie...No, we don't have a fitness club in the small town where we live. Our town is so small we don't even have a stop light!! The only home equipment I have is a stationery bike, and to do the exercise whereyou lay on your stomach and bend your knee up towards your butt (just WAIT till you do that one in PT!!!) I use a bed sheet and loop it around my ankle and lay on my bed. My insurance company is awesome, one of the top five in the nation...but still I'm not sure if they'd foot the bill for that...LOL...Oh yea, I had 16 in home PT visits starting right when I got home from the hospital. Not when I'm on disabilty right now.But the PT is SO important, I sure found that out the hard way!!! Guest guest
You probably can't get your insurance to cover it but....you can take it off as a tax deduction. All you need is the script from the dr. then you will be able to deduct a percentage IF you have enough to deduct medical that year. My daughter did it for her back Her hot tub cost about $6,000.
