I was in about 10 days, including both surgery and Rehab. Since I was allowed to drive upon discharge, I could have gone to outpatient then, but since I'm a P. T. I elected to do my own so I could receive a treatment for my peripheral neuropathy that only Home Care was providing at the time. After two weeks of tht, I started outpatient therapy, but even there, essentially did my own thing.

How long you stay in Rehab, whether you have Hospital Acute Rehab or the Rehab units in Long Term care Facility, and whether you then go to Home care or outpatient, is a pretty individual thing based on your own needs and progress.

I have in home therapy 2X week because hippies aren't allowed to

drive for 6 to 8 weeks and I had no one to take me to out patient

therapy. I'm walking around the house without a cane now. :) In

another month or less, maybe I'll be brave enough to walk everywhere

without one..

I took it nice and easy, and I have no regrets. I was in the

hospital (a clinic) for 8 days and 13 days in rehab. For me it was

like a vacation. However, I choose excellent facilities in the hills

above Nice, France.

Yes, " calicos. " When I recently said that I bought six new gold fish

for my outdoor fish pond I lied. Three of them look like little gold

fish, but the aren't the same color. I asked the saleperson what

they were called, and he said one of the names they are called

is " calicos. " I think that has something to do with color

arrangments, doesn't it? I'm not certain.

Stan - do you mean cats or goldfish? (sorry i'm way behind - the list is running away from me........)

I started to write to you about my goldfish sanctuary (4 goldfish + various shubunkin, gambuzia, etc.... happy and thriving in my garden pond) - and then my computer froze and I lost the mail.......... My internet researches tell me that there are also "calico goldfish" - which my calico cat loves to watch from the pondside....

I did my longest walk yet yesterday - up to the top of the Citadel, round the hilltop, and back home. One and a half hours in all.... and my legs were practically dropping off by the time I staggered home! I soaked in a steaming hot bath before collapsing into bed - wondering if I'd overdone things..... (though the doctor did say I could do "unlimited" walking...) Anyway, this morning I got up feeling fine!!! - aches and pains (almost) gone; right leg feeling definitely stronger.... Maybe I've turned a corner? Now I have to get in training for the Judean Mountains.......

Re your other mail - you say "its hard to be depressed when one lives on the French Riviera!" Believe me, I can get depressed *anywhere*.... the knack is learning how to hang on through the darkness, and emerge the other side...... I've also had rather an unusual life.... However, I am glad to know that our hip recuperations are proceeding normally. It is an up-and-down ride....... Thanks for the encouragement!

That sounds like my fish, Stan. When I bought mine, the Israeli young woman in my local pet-shop called them "Kliko". (Unlike French, Hebrew is written back-to-front, and consonants only... so deciphering "foreign" words can be an interesting challenge...). Some internet research on pond- and aquarium-fish led me to the conclusion that "goldfish" come in various colours, shapes and varieties - one of which is "calico" (silvery-blue/ black / red). A few weeks later, I bought 4 very similar-looking ones - this time she called them "shubunkin". Interestingly, my 4 shubunkin disappeared within a couple of weeks... (cats? veteran fish attacking newcomers? ???). My 2 "klikos" are still happily swimming around, along with the 4 goldfish, 2 carp, and indeterminate number of gambuzia ("mosquito fish" - doing a good job - I've hardly seen a mosquito all summer!)

If you want to get really confused, try googling "goldfish" + "calico" + "shubunkin"!

Stan, By the way, what did happen with your insurance coverage.

Did you ever get that straightened out?

Larry

My OS scheduled me for three weeks

in rehab, but I opted for two

weeks since I'm not covered under the French socialized health

system.

I bought six babies recently, three gold and three calikos, to keep

my big gold fish company. It's interesting, the little gold fellows

come out with the big ones when it's feeding time, but the calicos

seem shy. They wait awhile before they come out to join the rest. At

first, I feared that the big " poissons rouges " had eaten the

calicos, but they hadn't.

Maybe the calicos are not yet fully integrated yet because of their

color. They are actually quite pretty.

Thanks for doing the research.

It hurt like hell Susie. I hope I don't have to go through that again.

Well, it was like you know how the doctor says you'll have this and

that done, and you just nod your head without protesting? He told

me " We'll do both hips at the same time! (big smile) " Made it sound

like a piece of cake. You know how they are. I just nodded my head

and said OK. LOL, when they wheeled me into the operating room (I was

the first case that day and they rushed me to get into my gown) I

said to myself, What am I doing? Both HIPS? Then I fell asleep and

woke up to hear the surgeon say " Now we're going to do the other

side! " and they knocked me out again. I was afraid I wouldn't wake up

again. Then I woke up in recovery with the feeling of my legs

floating and my knees up. Weird. Everything was fine until the next

day when the physcial therapists came to make me get up and sit in a

chair...AHHHHHHHH!

Hi ,

I can only guess how much Pain you where in I don't know why some drs do that I always said the dr that does Hip and Knee replacement or any other kind should have it done to themself and see how they would act.

I wanted to have my Knee and Hip done at the same time but my dr wouldn't do it after I had my Hip operation I'm glad I didn't have it done at the same time.

I'm sorry you had so much pain I hope your feeling a lot better now. Well you take care.

Actually, the physical therapy is LESS painful with the pain meds......but there is still some pain. One gets out of bed as soon as possible, partly to prevent clots, partly to prevent lung problems. It's definately got to be harder for the first few days when you have both done, but you will probably be able to have the morphine pump at least at first, and good pain control the rest of the time. The risk of having TWO surgical proceedures, particularly when older, is worth avoiding.

Hi,

I believe they were cementless. I have the expensive new ceramic

joints. Very smooooooth when I walk. I love em'! I'm going to the

surgeon tomorrow for my 6 week post op check. I'll ask him if they

were cementless or not.

It was very painful the day after, but I had a previous blood clot

from knee surgery and I couldn't have the epidural pain relief in my

back that would put the pain medicine in the area. I only had a

morphine drip in my arm so it probably won't be as painful for you.

Hey but it's over quick. After the first day I was ok with the pain.

It's great having it over and done with, you can't favor any side

LOL, and you don't have to dread going back and having it done on the

other side again.

Good Luck

Hi Susie,

I knew it was going to be painful. Come on, what surgery isn't

painful? I see these kids on tv having plastic surgery done and

they're crying it was the most painful surgery. HA! They should try

joint replacment!

Probably the doc felt if I go through it twice, that's two chances

of getting a blood clot again instead of one. I'm very happy I did it

his way. And as I mentioned to someone else, it's really only painful

the next day when they get you up into a chair. After that it's not

bad at all except when you're doing the physical therapy, but if you

have the pain medication, it's not painful. I just wanted to get off

the pain meds asap when I got home to be able to drive and not have

liver/kidney damage. It was my choice.

That's what I thought I said y. The physical therapy is less

painful with pain meds. By the time I got home after a week I weaned

my self off. The pain wasn't too bad anymore. I needed meds in the

hospital, in rehab and for about a week when I got home.

Now I have some kind of positional vertigo that's annoying me. I

heard from the lab person who drew my blood today that people can get

physical therapy for that! If it doesn't get better soon, I'm going

to a specialist. One doc said it was viral. I never knew you can have

physical therapy for positional vertigo. Interesting.

: do you notice that your eyes sort of jump back and forth after

you sit up, and when you get dizzy? I would recommend a good

audiologist to evaluate the vertigo. Yes, some PT's are trained in

treatment of vestibular problems, and in re-positioning the little sand

piles in your inner ear that cause this dizziness....I do not have that

skill, although I have seen it done.

Is it getting better on its own, or is it still as bad?
