Hi Barb

I can't answer specifically, as I haven't had a TKR. But I have had inflammatory arthritis in my right knee for 13 years and wondered if you had good muscle tone in that leg? If your leg muscles (especially the quadriceps/thigh muscles) have wasted at all, it would be worth building them up with low-impact exercise like stationary cycling or swimming. When I first did this, my knee pain reduced dramatically and my stability and balance improved.

Range-of-motion exercises are of course important too :)

I had my left knee replaced on Sept. 20. I now can walk without a cane, however I am still in pain. My x-rays show that everything is in place. I feel stiff in the morning and after walking in stores or, as I did lately, had a party, I was in considerable pain. Has anyone else experienced this?My knee was in bad shape for eight years, and I don't know if that had anything to do with that.I would love to hear about anyone's experiences.

Barb, Yep, talk about adding insult to injury. If the aging process isn't enought, I now bought myself big knees. :-) Since I wrote, I decided I needed to move more. And Jackie and Margaret's postings, among others, made me go out and fill the fridge with veggies and fish. On Jan. 1, I am going to rid the house the Christmas goodies that well-meaning friends bestowed on me. I agree. Winter absolutly has a direct impact on our pain. I can't wait to see if the warmth of spring will help the pain and swelling. Let's give it some time and see what spring brings. But I'm still thinking about the second opinion. Let's continue to compare notes. Warm regards, Donna Barb Freitag <editor89@...> wrote: Thanks for your response, Donna. Both knees at one time -- wow!!!! Oh, gosh, , I'm sorry. Twice the size?! I'm at three months and two weeks. So still hoping for the good results with time as well as warm weather. It was a rainy week here, and, gosh, it hurt. Sometimes I think I'm hurting everywhere, but focus on the knees I still don't regret surgery because the I was losing the use of my knees. When I got home from surgery, I read about the knees designed for a woman's structure. Too late for us, darn it. But if there is a market for a knee for a woman, it was obviously designed because you, me and Barb aren't the only ones who think we have big knees. I'd love to know if the results are better for women getting the this newly designed knee! <arkiegirl43@...> wrote: my tkr was done 4 yrs ago and i still have pain, and stiffness, when we have rain forcasted i know about it befor anyone else does.and yes my knee looks twice the size it was Donna Hart <ohdonna_68 > wrote: Barb, Yep, talk about adding insult to injury. Wow, four years and still have pain and stiffness. My right knee

isn't in the best of shape but not ready to have surgery. I think it

will have to be bone to bone, like my left knee, before I would

attempt it. I get really tired of pain. I'm on celebrex now and it

is better than the other stuff I was taking, but still not great. I

have lots of trouble sitting in a chair. I have a lazy boy and I

have to place a pillow under my knees just to be comfortable. Don't

I sound like a whiner! I just hope, in the long run, it is all worth

it. My husband just heard that it took eight months before one

person was really back in shape.

I was very active in a fitness center, until I couldn't walk well. I

had two disks in my neck replaced, so there were some exercises I

couldn't do, due to that. My PT has advised me on some exercises I

can do now along with how long or how many reps and how much weight.-

I had both knees replaced one month after you - on October 20th. I

can also walk without a cane, and my legs both straighten and flex

well (120 plus). However -- I still have pain when I walk - a

different pain, which now seems to be mostly coming from where the

muscles attach right above the knee joints, rather than in the joints

themselves (which are free of the various pains I used to have). And

at night, I am still using some pain meds because of the pain that

wakes me up. I also have stiffness in the morning and after sitting

in one position for a while. So at this point I can't tell if I'll

ever be pain-free - or be able to walk/hike several miles - which was

my goal and the point of having this surgery. My doctor, by the way,

thinks I'm doing fine...

the humidity has always bothered my arthritis as well, i think that's why when i lived in charlotte, NC, i hurt so bad; however, i still think it's more humid in Toledo, OH, being right on the lake and all. LOL just thinking outloud, or whatever. ;-))))))))))))))))

I also have had the pain in the muscle right above the knee. It

almost feels like it's going to cramp. It's amazing how the pain

changes from time to time. But it's much better than three months

ago. I haven't used a cane in a while. I work in a college so I use

it there so that students don't run into me. I'm not well

coordinated and fall easily and I don't want that to happen! Best

wishes, Judy,

Barb
