I had an epidural for both of mine. Heck every surgery I have had an

epidural. I haven't had to much issues with it. The only thing that did

happen was with the last one I had, nothing to do with THR though it was for

a C Section. They hit the area wrong and had to laticain it again. But once

it kicked in all was good. You don't have the " half out of it " feeling

after. And are able to be up and around a little bit faster then say with

general. Also there is no need from what I understand to intabate you for

the surgery under an Epidural. So no sore throat and such.

I had a totally intravenous general (no gases), called a " TE_VA " excuse the

spelling please,

as well as a spinal anaesthetic (not epidural) for my last resurfacing. It was

brilliant in that

for the first time in 20 plus generals I wasn't sick! plus I was awake and fine

straight away.

People who have had just spinals or epidurals and are awake seem to get on fine.

It is best

to discuss with the anaesthetist. he/she really knows best for each individual.

the best of luck

BTW an epidural is different from a spinal anaesthetic.

I have had spinals, epidural and general. The spinal was great, no

groggy feeling. But I drank lots of liquids like they say and was up

every few minutes to use the bathroom. (this was for a scope of the

knee) For the first THR I had an epidural with general anaesthesia.

It seemed to do nothing for the pain. The last hip, shoulders and

revision of the hip were all general. I had no groggy feeling or

sore throat. They finally got it right! But this has taken over a

dozen surgeries to have me feel wonderful and alert post op.

So I think it is trial and error. Go with what you feel comfortable

with doing.

Experience here. It was wonderful for me. I had asked that I not be able to remember anything at all, and that is how it was. By using the epidural, they are not messing with your lungs. That is a big plus for those with asthma or lung problems.

Yes do it. That's my advice. Take the epidural you will feel much better when you wake up. Try and use as little morphine as possible it made me very sick and I actually vomitted then I stopped using it and felt much better. Good luck the 1st week is the most difficult and since then I've gradually felt better everyday.

BigE:

I had an epidural with an additional " cocktail " when I had my resurf

done. I didn't wake up in the OR, didn't remember a thing. After

surgery I felt quite good and ate a fairly big dinner that night - no

problems with nausea at all. It worked great for me.

Good luck!

>>>Hope yours works out. They've attempted it twice with me and neither "took" so was waste of time for me. :( I told them not to even bother the third time around...... but if it works for ya~ certainly would help with the pain levels. Best of luck
