Vicki,

I believe they are titanium surgical staples and should last longer than

any of us will ever need. Future archeologists just will not be able to

carbon-date them. LOL

My doc won't let my staples come out until 9/9!!! That seems like an unreasonably long amount of time to me

>>> Don't freak out lee.... I had the same issue my last revision. What you can be thankful for is them leaving THEM ALL in tact to heal. Of 27 staples I had.... they removed the some that they felt had healed well and left the ones that they felt needed more time. I had like 3 lil spots that sceeped for about 9 days after surgery.... those seemed the spots that were left. Any hoots.... I was relieved to get what I did pulled... UNTIL I had gotten home and been doing the moving round deal~ sitting & what have ya. They had left two pulled one... pulled 3 skipped 6.. pulled one left one.... was just a lil puzzle looking no pattern deal. But sheesh alive.... having all at least stablized them against one another or something because after the pulling what they did had been done. Seemed like my staples left got snagged up on everything they could and when I'd sit~ they'd interlock amoung one another and feel like they were being ripped outta my skin. That lasted 2 days before I returned with all my nice VERY RED IRRATED pulled about skin complaining to the doctor. Some which were doing great weren't so hot when I'd returned! So I got some more added and a few of the others pulled to fix the issue. STUNK! Mine also stayed about lil better then 2 wks. in..... just keep an eye on them. If they start looking hummm puckery ? for lack of better word then their on the end of needing pulled. My hub actually took out the last of my staples (because we got snowed in and I couldn't stand it any longer) I've had enough to know when they're healed well.... I just scheduled follow up afterward. Doc wasn't happy I suppose because they couldn't bill for the removal LOL but everything was much better for me.

Feels like I'm sitting on a tack.... Generally I tell everyone worst day in terms of the surgery is usually the second because the soreness has had time to set in.... and then the next 2~3 wks. of literally PAIN IN THE BUTT from the staples / stitches and first few weeks of PT. After that... it kinda becomes a breeze. Look at the upside.... surgery is over for you.... and your nearing the 3 wk. :) don't think in terms of the aggreivations your currently experiencing with it all..... where were you 3 wks ago to date ? Point is... you've came a VERY LONG WAY.... it's gonna get better. I know the process of getting there sucks.... but think in terms of what you've over come and where your at to date. Sheesh the staples weren't removed.... Grrrrrrrr til their gone! Well.... that's one way of looking at it... on the other hand they've become apart of you and love ya so much they want to stay <giggling> stinks that their uncomfortable but good news is.... sooner or later like kids~ they'll grow up and leave your nest. Love them while you can... they've kept you together, protected you from infection and are TRYING to give ya a good looking scar (*if there is such a thing LOL) they'll be gone soon. Think positive... the mind is a very powerful tool when used well. :)

Good point about the where was I 3 weeks ago. I guess that puts it into perspective LOL. But it probably won't stop me from crabbing about it.... LOL

PT was here this a.m. and gave me a ton of "standing" exercises. Said next week, we'll try using the treadmill (albeit slowly) too. told me to start weaning off 2 crutches to one.

Wow, that sounds like a long time to have staples in. Mine were out in 12 days with each of my surgeries. I wondered if they'd be ready to remove but the nurse said they were, and it was such a relief to get them out. I guess every OS has his/her own methods!

Staples

Ughhhhhhh!!!! My doc won't let my staples come out until 9/9!!! That seems like an unreasonably long amount of time to me (also to the therapist who will be removing them) as she said it is usually only 10 + days. September 9 will be THREE WEEKS!!! They are starting to lift, move around and be generally painful. The staple sites are getting red from the irritation. I called the doc this a.m. to try to talk him out of it and he's not budging. Feels like I'm sitting on a tack....

Hi lee,

I was in a Nursing Home after I had my Hip replacement done and the dr it seem like he forgot that I needed my staples remove it was almost three weeks then this nurse remove them I had 38 all together and it hurt a lot when she took them out I think thats way I have bursitis and bad scar tissues in my Hip that I had replace .

You are at home right ? Maybe you could go to the hospital and have them remove if your dr having you wait so long maybe you should talked to your PT.

Well I hope things work out for you and you have a nice day.

Hi Susie and all....

The home PT called the drs office and said she would like to take them out. He said no, not until the 9th. I called the doc's office and pleaded and he wasn't budging. So I guess this is the norm. There is nothing I would like more than to remove them, seems to me they will start growing into the skin if they stay there too long. We thought maybe the doc said "day 9" instead of "the 9/th" but I guess nobody was confused but me... LOL

Last night, they were torture. I flipped and flopped around 'til 2:30 a.m. Could NOT find a comfortable position. I finally packed a couple of pillows under my butt and was able to go to sleep. I sure hope Friday (9/9) gets here soon......

puts it into perspective LOL. But it probably won't stop me from crabbing about it.... LOL >>>Yes lee it certainly does put it all in a way different light looking back upon things. I even kept a journal during my recovery... it jot things here and there.... but not as often. It's just really nice when your having a bad day to look back and actually see for yourself.... Hummmm welp obviously I THOUGHT this was a bad day... because looking back~ I remember THAT BAD DAY! PHEW.... happy I'm not there and WOOHOOIE hurting means it's at least attatched~ LOL Crabbing your entitled to but just remember it won't change things. :) Maybe invest your crab day to finding someone else that feels bad too and help them to see their matters from a different view... in that... chances are you too will look at your issue a lil differently just hearing their troubles. I think your doing great about it all though~ I know it's a VERY LONG struggle.... but your on the best side of the matter~ RECOVERING. :) You could be feeling much worse still awaiting the whack date. So find yourself a smile... and make the most of it, won't be much longer and hopefully you'll be feeling much better. :)

next week, we'll try using the treadmill (albeit slowly) too. told me to start weaning off 2 crutches to one. >>> Well that sounds like your doing terrific :) Just remember to open your pie hole and speak up if it gets to be too much too fast on ya! As to taken to one crutch instead of using the two. I don't agree with it~ but that's because I've had cortizone shots in mine over getting a nice WOREN OUT shoulder doing the same. :( Plus it makes you want to shift your weight to the good side creating a limpy walk. I think one should either be on them or off. Ask about a cane... you'd get the same support but instead of all the pressure being in your arm pit you've got more control and it's in your hand using a cane. I did the one crutch deal after 1 & 2 operation.... 3 I went from crutches to cane period and there was a noticable difference for me. Maybe if you just started using it within your PT first you'd feel more comfortable about trusting yourself to walk with it solo two. Best of luck 2 ya sweetie regardless of your choice :) May your recovery only continue to get better!

When I had my hip resurfaced, the incision was closed with a glue. It

was awesome. No stitches or staples to remove and no tracks on the

sides of the incision where the stitches or staples went into the skin.

All I have is a very thin scar that has faded to a barely visible fine

line. ..... Maxine

---Not scary at all, ....

You can take a shower the same way you do with staples. Put a

waterproof bandage over the incision when showering (no sitting in a

tub or getting into a pool) then remove the water proof bandage and

clean with betadine as instructed by hosp. staff and put your

regular bandage on. The bandages are provided by the hospital where

I had my surgery.

The glue isn't like Elmers glue, it's a special glue made especially

for surgeries and wounds.

After a week and a half I was able to shower without a water proof

bandage and remove the steristrips, then leave the incision open to

the air. It healed and held together beautifully. ..... Maxine

Hi Maxine, I think that is so neat using glue then you wouldn't get scare tissues how long ago did you have your operations? Susiebayleerocks <bayleerocks@...> wrote: ---Not scary at all, ....You can take a shower the same way you do with staples. Put a

What works well to cover your incision on knee replacements for a

shower is the Saran press and seal.
