I started coumadin the day after surgery and took it for 30 days.

I have been on coumadin for six weeks - one more week to go when I see the surgeon for my post-op visit. I had my blood tested twice a week and the dosage adjusted each time. I was totally against taking coumadin but at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York they insist upon it. I am 51 years old and in really good health plus very active. I don't understand why you need to take coumadin if you are able to walk or run a couple of miles each day. Isn't coumadin for people who are unable to move around and inactive?

Lovenox, 5 days in the hosp, 20 days at home. Gave myself the

injections.

I asked for it to avoid having to go for the blood test that is needed

when on Coumadin. Surgeon prefers the Lovenox over Coumadin.

Anticoagulant therapy...how long

and what?

I was on warfarin (same as coumadin) for about 4-5 weeks. I also

wore TEDS knee high socks for about 6 weeks.

Ian,

Surgery: 4/14/2003...Age:46

I was also given heparin. The 1st 48 hrs post I had the white support

hose above my knee and inflatable what ever they are called around my

legs. For 10 days post I was given a hepran shot in my stomach every

morning..I called it my rabies shot. The shot was with a fine need and

did not hurt. I couldn't wait to get home to take those hose off - 10

days following surgery.

I haven't been able to find anything that points to what would

indicate Coumadin over LMW Heparain (Lovenox, Enoxiparin ,Doxiparin)

and why there seems to be such variation in the length of therapy.

Coumadin is tough to keep at a proper therapeutic level... don't want

to be bonking your head with your clotting times too high, and it

lasts so long... old school really.

I guess there is just subjectivity on the part of the docs...

You say: " I don't understand why you need to take coumadin if you are

able to walk or run a couple of miles each day. "

But---I'll bet you weren't walking or running a couple miles right

after your THR surgery. I guess that's why precautions are taken -

in the form of a drug or device such as TEDS or pneumatic stockings

during the time you are most inactive.

You're right about immediately after THR surgery but I am six weeks post-op and still taking coumadin and having my blood tested twice a week. I don't get it!
