Judy, It's been 11 weeks since I had both knees replaced, and I am still dealing with more darn pain than I expected. Which is what most feel after thier first joint replacement. As the pain slowly abates, my sleeping improves. Also, I am adapting to the pain and getting more rest. I believe one of my pain meds made me antsy. I slept better when I was able to stop it. Still, I don't think I would be getting nearly the rest if I wasn't taking an etended-release sleeping pill that puts me to sleep and keeps me asleep. I know what you don't want is one more pill. But If I didn't take it, I don't know

how I would get enough rest to get me to work in the morning. The pain is at its worst when I awake, and it's tough to get ready to work. As it is, I need three hours after I get up -- to take my medication and a hot bath, etc. One thing that helps me is wearing the big, bulky ice wraps to bed at night. It relieves the pain for me to get to sleep and anchors me during the night, keeping me on my back with legs straight for at least part of the night. When I lay in the position I've slept in all my life -- on my side with my legs bent -- I'm in pain within minutes. On weekends, a nap does wonders. The more rest I get -- day or night -- the less pain I have. At five weeks, I had to give up my naps when I returned to work. I've adjusted, but I did better with

more rest. If I feel particularly bad at then end of the work day, I skip the pool, grocery shopping or whatever I planned, come straight home from work and take a short nap. I would expect that to keep me up later, but it doesn't. I'm more relaxed and in less pain and just as ready as ever to go to sleep at bedtime. I always keep my paid med and reading material on my bedstand. If pain gets the best of me during the night, I take the pill and ease back into sleep by reading and stretching. I have other tricks I've learned since arthritis started interfering with sleep. I invested in a better mattress. I indulged in some very comfy sheets and comforter

that makes my bed a haven I look forward to crawling into at night. I stay in the livingroom until I'm ready for bed. I don't turn the T.V. on in my bedroom at night because it stimulates me. Reading helps put me to sleep as long as it's not a page-turner. If the book is too good, I leave it in the livingroom and take a newspaper to bed instead. Five weeks is not a long time into recovery. You will rest better as the pain eases -- I promise. Happy healing! Warm regards, Donna Judy <jdytart@...> wrote: Folks, when did your sleeping get back to normal? Of course, thepain seems much worse at night also. After 5 weeks, I think it'sgetting slightly better, but I cannot count on a solid night of sleep. What suggestions can you give me for dealing with this, or how longwill it take for my sleep patterns to get back on an even keel? Thanks,Judy

Yes, even with a pillow between my knees it hurts - but - sleeping on

my back hurts too ...

I do have puzzles at my bedside, a radio - sometimes it's drone puts

me to sleep - pain meds - an ice chest with my ice packs in it... some

little snacks - everything I can think of.

Maybe it is time to consider sleeping pills, at least for a while. I

do get a nap during the day, usually about an hour (since I've always

had a little nap I don't think this is interfering with sleep at night).

Maybe staying up later would help? I am SO ready for bed by 9 PM, but

maybe if I tried to stay up a little later it would help.

Thanks for all these ideas...

Donna, do you have any idea which of your pain meds made you antsy?

I've been on a minimum pain patch, but in a couple of days I'm going

to get off of that and then I'll basically be on vicodin (taking Aleve

as well a couple times a day). Like you, I did not expect the amount

of pain I've had - during the day I can cope with it and not take any

extra meds - its at night that it really gets to me. I wonder if it

will go away faster if I try to exercise more and build my strength

and flexibility up more, or if the exercise itself is making my legs

hurt more - like too much exercise and strain would in " real life "

when you overdo.

Yes, , I had both knees done. When you all talk about using your good leg to lift and support the sore one, I can't relate. I don't have a good one! :-) Also, the physical therapist told me to lay, as much as possible. with my legs extended our straight and flat as possible. Maybe she meant just in the beginning? Out of habit, I've slept with a pillow between my knees since I was a kid. Gosh, I miss it! Yes, it was the oxycotin. I slept better when I went off it. It could be a coincidence. But I saved two oxycotin for the next week when I had an outing with my grandchildren. That night I was up in the middled of the night for a few hours reading. Night is definitely the worst time. I use my cane to get out of bed in the morning and to get around until my meds kick in. Doing too much or not enough? That's a good question for your PT. But from what you written, Judy, it sounds like you are disciplined doing your exercises? If you are in pain, I'd hesitate to step up the exercises. You sound like an achiever, maybe even an overachiever? :-) When I increased my activity, I did it in the pool. Still, I overdid the first few times I went in on my own. Again, those darn unrealistic expectations I didn't listen to my PT, who took me through gentle

exercises the first two times and cautioned me about doing more. Before surgery, I could work out for two hours in the pool and never be sore afterward. No more. It seems more isn't better when it comes to joint replacement recovery. Judy <jdytart@...> wrote: Donna, do you have any idea which of your pain meds made you antsy? , Staying up later helps, but if your body tells you at 9 it's ready for bed, then it is. You're still depriving yourself of sleep. I have a sleep disorder anyway. I don't think I'd make it to work without the sleeping pills. You do risk dependency. But not necessarily. It sounds like you lead an active and athtletic life style and will sleep just fine when you can get back to it or when the pain eases. I just know that never in my life has body demanded so much rest. Neither has it ever been asked to heal like this! judy, i'd say when you're tired, go to sleep -- your body knows best. and sleep all you can because sleep is important for recovery. good idea to have those things next to your bed.

well i've always slept on my tummy, but sort of on the side of my tummy, with my right leg cocked out to the side and bent at the knee, which could be why my joint is so totally wrecked. i have no clue how i'll ever sleep on my back, like i said, i have a sleep disorder already and sleep comes by rather difficultly -- i worry i'll flip over on my belly and cock that ol leg and OUCH, i'll be in big trouble. somebody strap me down!

Susie, Thank you for your kind words. I had double replacement because of the amount of sick leave from work. It was also cheaper. One deductible for the hospital instead of two among other things. But, LOL, a couple of times early on in recovery, I would have kicked myself if I had a good leg to kick with. :-) Now it's done, and I'm glad. Yes, I also asked my doctor if could combine a hip and a knee, two hips, etc. So far, at least here in Virginia, the only multiple replacements doctors will do is two knees. That's okay. I want to take my time with my hip replacements-- one at a time. Maybe starting in 2008. Donna, my patch is fentanyl, but maybe it's the same as oxycontin.

I just " might " be a little bit of an overachiever... Though my home

PT gave me so many exercises, I honestly just didn't do them all, or

barely did some just to be good. I'm going to outpatient PT this

morning - it will be interesting to see what their opinion is - I'm

going to try to ask them about doing enough versus overdoing. I'm

also going to ask my doc for some sleeping meds.

I really want to get back in the water again, drive, etc. But I guess

I'd better not push myself too much.

Take care of yourself,

Hi Judy,

I'm on the patch too. How many mg are you taking. I started post-op

at 75mg and went down to 25 a couple of weeks ago. When PT told me

that I was losing ground because of my lowered threshold they put me

back up to 50mg. Now I'm up to 115-degrees and sleeping better. I

found out what PT with no Pain Meds was like last week when I misread

the calendar and forgot to switch my patch and missed 4 days with no

medication. Boy did that hurt. Oh well we all have stupid moments.

Anyway to all, what ever you are on, don't try to come off too fast or

it will impact your ability to progress in PT. There will be plenty of

time to get off the medication after PT is done. No one likes being on

pain meds, but unfortunately the recovery from TKR requires it. Chin

up and keep pushing for PT. Our pay-off is 6-months from now when we

are all walking PAIN FREE.

Best to All,

Alan B.

I am on the .25 fentanyl patch - and I'm planning to stop it with the

current patch. I really want to do this so I can get back to driving

as soon as possible. My ortho gave me a prescription for Norco, which

is the same as vicodin but stronger - and has half the amount of

tylenol, so you can take more of it. So I will be switching to this

and hope it goes okay... I've just recently started sleeping a little

better, also. I asked my ortho for a sleeping pill, but he suggested

trying benadryl first, and it actually seems to help quite a bit - I

sleep longer and more deeply before waking up sometime in the middle

of the night, and can get back to sleep more easily.

Good luck to you!

Hi Judy,

I'm on Norco too. That gives you and idea what kind of pain I use to

be in before surgery. I've been on both for about 1.5 years. I can't

wait to be off of them both. I still drive but after I started the

meds I waited 3-weeks for my body to acclimate. I'm down to about 3 or

4 Norco a day. I was up to 10 pre-op. What a difference a little

double TKR can do.
