And also the depression part. I was actually wishing that the male PT I had would have to have a joint replacement. His knee was hurting him and I'm going yeah!!!! Guest guest
Dear Friend, Sorry but I think (and this is just my opinion) that your PT is an idiot and a sadist. I took pain meds for two months post both Knees and although I did step down from vicodin to percoset I was not EVER told by either the DR or the PT. to stop or that I needed to 'quit'. You alone know what your pain tolerance is and what your body tells you. Your PT hasn't had this surgery (again I assume here) and they have no idea what you personally can handle. It isn't their place to call your Dr. and state what he/she should do. If you are still having PT at home you are not ready to stop the pain meds as I assume you will continue with outpatient PT. after this. I would call your Dr and share your feelings about this with him/her asap. We here do not tell people 'what to do' we just share experience strength and hope and let people know what we personally have gone through. Gee there are support groups for everything else why not this? God Bless you and stand up for yourself. We know what we are talking about cuz we HAVE BEEN THERE!!!!!! And no one is saying 'Do this or else' either. Listen to your body and go from there. Warm Hugs, Contessa sorry folks but this really pissed me off. -- Pain Meds Question Hi Everyone. I have a question for you if you don't mind sharing this info. I'm 3 weeks post op as of two days ago, and have been taking my pain meds Vicodin, 5/325 mg - still. I take them as needed, sometimes 2-3 a day. Not every four hours like when I first got home, usually I go for several hours in between. I always take them before my PT comes. Monday I asked my doc if I could take 1 1/2 of them if I really needed it cause my therapy sometimes just is very painful for me. His assistant told me no problem. Anyway, yesterday my PT told me I needed to stop taking my med, that most people by now are off them and taking Tylenol for the pain. Is this true? I can't imagine that with therapy people wouldn't still need them. I don't have much of a pain tollerance myself, and I'm really struggling with my therapy She plans on calling my doc today to tell him to take me off my pain meds cause they are making me depressed she says....she says everytime she comes over I'm more depressed and not wanting to do my exercises, especially on my own...which is true. But I am in so much pain when I try to do them. The thought is there....I am just hurting! What a mess I am in.... So this morning now I am taking 3 over the counter Motrin instead on my Viocdin, same thing as I did last night. Oh, and she told me to "quit going on line and getting information from people (meaning my friends here) who don't really know what they're talking about......now THAT pissed me off. I told her we share experiences and support eachother. And that's what we need. I dread we she comes over. Debra
Guest guest
AMEN Greywolf well said I agree totally (see my reply) -- RE: Pain Meds Question I've seen this question several times, and some of the answers-- and they all amaze me. Judging from what I've seen on this group, I must be one of the most fortunate-- never needed painkillers after I left the hospital (8 days post-op for the first, because I was in an anti-coagulant clinical study and 5 days for the second), in fact never needed them from the third day post-op in either case. The question of painkillers is a VERY individual one, and each person knows their own body, pain tolerance and limits better than anyone else. Guest guest
Hi my name is Terrie I had a THR done 6/29/2004 and I took pain medicine for a long time after my surgery because its true only we know what we are feeling and no pt has the right to call your doctor about your pain meds only you so you need to tell her not to call him I still take propoxyphene for pain once in a while and my doctor gives it to me I take it because my leg muscles hurt from time to time. hope you feel better I am 48 and I feel sore pretty often but I am so glad I had my THR I was 7 years old when my hip started giving me problems so I waited as long as I could.Crazy Contessa <momcats55@...> wrote: Dear Friend, Sorry but I think (and this is just my opinion) that your PT is an idiot and a sadist. Guest guest
Debra: tell you P.T. to get on this site, and join in the fun! The owner, Alisa, is a P.T., and I am a P.T., although I don't follow the posts very often any more. I give my patients the information on this site, so they can join in the fun and get the support/ camaraderie that everyone needs and enjoys. Everyone progresses at different rates, and everyone is affected by the medicines differently. Try ice paks before the PT comes, and for sure afterwards. Ask your doctor about your meds, and possibly changing them. When do you go back to see him? Guest guest
I agree with the other two that have responded. If you feel you need then then you need them. If it was six months after I think you should get everything checked out. If your doctor has any balls they will stand up to the PT and ask which one went to school to be a doctor. My husbands doctor did it to his PT after he got tennis elbow and the PT said it should be all better now, you may return to work, the doctor said no but what would he know he's only a doctor. And hung up on the PT. I would also recommend getting to your doctor first, if you can and explain what the PT is going to do. This way giving the doctor time to prepare for the call and not be caught off guard. My husbands OS told him to take his meds for the first three weeks I think it was on time. Not to let them laps. And to make sure you have them before the PT. He ended up not going to a PT after his hip because the OS, nurses, and PT at the hospital, didn't like how either PT in our home town worked. So they gave him home work and he was off crutches totally by three weeks.I think he was still using his pain meds at five weeks some of the time. Now depending on the hip you got, your age, how you heal, pain, and if you do exercise, will depend on when you get better. As for not going online. Last time I checked no one was really handing out medical advice, that wasn't a doctor. "you don't need pain meds" A quote from you PT, who is not a doctor. I came on from the time I found out when my husbands surgery was to about two months after. I just started coming back online to pass on what we learned and to support others. What I have noticed on here is that people encourage others to see a doctor, if it sounds odd. Better safe than sorry. Also in Canada it is illegal to give out medical information without written consent of the patient. And you are not supposed to give out medical advice if you are not a doctor. (gray area) Hope this helps keep us informed on the out come.
