Domeboro is a " soak " type of medication for

wounds. Why does it need to be stored with

bacitracin? That's a question I pose to the

writer of the test. The question implies it has

to be stored with bacitracin, which it doesn't.

Store in the " topicals " under " D " . Regards,

Hi Kim,

(1) Which dosage form of Ventolin do you mean - Aerosol, powder for inhalation,

syrup or tablet?

(2) Domboro (calcium acetate and aluminum sulfate) is a topical skin productand

is used as an astringent wet dressing for skin inflammation and weeping

dermatitis. It is available OTC (like bacitractin ointment) and would be

stocked in the first aid department.

(3) A Class A prescription balance is a two-pan torsion type balance which uses

both internal and external weights. Class A balances have a sensitivity

requirement of up to 6 mg. They have a minimum weighable quantity of 120 mg

and most have a maximum weighable quantity of 60 gms though some will weigh up

to 120 gms. I can't find any information pertaining to B & C classes. Did you

actually read that somewhere or are you assuming there exist other balances like

this? The only other type of balance I found was an electronic or analytical

balance which are used to measure less than 120 mg and have sensitivities of

around 1 mg.

(4) Reconstituted Amoxil suspension remains stable 7 days at room temperature

or 14 days if refrigerated. Oral unit-dose syringes are stable for 48 hours.

(5) It's been awhile. I'll leave this one to someone more knowledgeable.

We're all here to answer questions. You can never ask too many. My chemistry

professor always told us the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So keep on

sqeaking!!

I hope this helped.

Dear All,

Domeboro is an astringent which means it is something that

would 'dry' out a wound or an infection that may be oozing. An

example is that Doboro is used for Poison Ivy and works quite well.

For mor information about

http://knoledge.org/oak/

Rxlist.com did not have much on it. But I have used it before for a

fungal infection that needed to be dried up on my foot.

Also Domeboro Acetic Acid Otic IS an anti-infective as antibacterial

and antifungal (for ears only) and this is WHY it would be stored on

the bacitracin shelf.

However since we are talking about an otic I would put it on the Otic

shelf.

If I am talking about the dry powder packets then this domeboro is

aluminum ascetate and is the astringent soak. I would put it on the

Topical shelf. Perhaps near and somewherer between the betadine

solution or witch hazel.

I hope this 'clears thing up " Ha sorry abouthte pun! Pun Intended!

One more bit of info: When I was a kid my dad used to use an alum

stick or aseptic stick. It had Alum or aluminum in it. It was used to

stop bleeding. I did a research on it and found that the French still

make it and consider it an antinfective!!WHY? Because it has

aluminum!

Alum Stick.

" " L'OCCITANE FOR MEN / Shaving

Item #: ME0205 A super quick-fix in a translucent crystal stick, it

immediately stops cuts from bleeding while disinfecting the irritated

area. An indispensable accessory for everyone who shaves. " " "

http://uk.loccitaneworld.com/browse.cfm/4%2C270%2C1%2C5%2C53.html

Now I know my dear friend Dave can relate to this aseptic stick! Hee!

Of course due to its drying power or ability it acts to dry up the

blood too!

I have another story about alum powder but it will have to wait!

Besides it is a bit embarrassing! Stay tuned!

Good Job on 1-4, !

I have already expounded on # 1, in response to Daves reply, which

explains WHY this is kept next to the bacitracin, because in addition

to being an astringent it is also an anti-infective.

Regarding the expiration date: The Federal law is 50% of the

remaining date on the package OR one year which ever comes first.

However there are some other laws which state 25% of the remaining

time or one year which ever comes first. Then there is another law

that states one year from the filling date or the manufactures date

which ever comes first!!!

The two laws that you may see on the exam are most likely will be the

two most common in practice:

1. 50% of the remaining time of the Manufactures date or one year

which ever comes first

OR

2. one year from the fill date or the manufacture's expiration date

which ever comes first.

In practice the second one is more stringent and is usally used.

The reasoning is this:

Where do customers/paitents keep their medications?

Most often in a tropical humid bathroom that deteriorates the drug

with mositure, heat and humidity. The place? A medicine cabinet!

What a laugh!

Others keep them on the night stand in case of a heart attack! Such

as in the case of NTG!! Why? To have it handy! Right? Right!

And what happens in the morning when the pt has survived another

night? The sun light comes in through the window and heats up the NTG

inthat amber bottle that is not supposed to be exposed to light or

heat and alters the chemistry, potency and therefore the expiration

date! LET'S SEE WHAT ABOUT THE CAR GLOVE COMPARTMENT? OR THE FRONT

JEANS POCKET (BODY HEAT)OR THE REFRIGERATOR??

What I am saying is we can not predict how the pt will keep or where

the pt will keep his/her medications!! Therefore we can not say how

long the med will last. But we can say that hopefully the pt will

keep it reasonably well up to one year. But this is not always the

case.

For some drugs we must give only 6 months such as NTG, Antibiotics,

or Ophthalmics (for eyes). Also once a drug is removed from its

original packaging or container and placed in a " unit dose " or bubble

pack we can only give it 50% of the time remaining of the mfg exp

date or one year which ever is less or the mfg date or one year

which ever is less. Why? Because the manufactures won a coudrt

decision that if we remove their drug from their original packaging

that 'THEY' can no longer guarantee the stability of that drugt!

In fact while we are on the subject!!! They also won the right that

WE can NOT put the TRADE name on the pre-packaged lable!!! Why?

Because again they do not want to be part of a law suit if " WE " mixed

up " their " drugs or contaminated " their " drugs during the unit dose

pre-packing!!! So the court was on their side. The SAME goes

for 'their lot number " - WE CAN NOT put their lot number onthe unit

dose pre-packing!!! WE CAN NOT PUT the TRADE Name of the drug on unit

dose prepacked items that WE have prepacked. BUT we MUST keep a log

that shows which drug, TRADE/generic name and MFG AND LOT # we have

pre-packed in Unit dose containers, and how many (qty) and when

(date) and who (which tech ?) and who checked them? and we must have

a FACILITY LOT number that cross references all of this.

Okay I hopw this helps.....

Dear Dave,

I knew I coud count on on you!! I could just not recall those two

words: " syptic pencil " , yet I remember them and my dad using them.

They are not very sanitary, unless only one person uses the same

pecil and runs hot wat on the tip t ris off any and all residue of

blood. In today's world it is frowned upon.

I am sure I can read your mind about the storage of 'where ever your

Hi Jeanetta, Dave and All,

Styptic pencils are actually still available at " your local drug store. " They

are usually sold/located (in of all places) the men's cosmetic section near the

shaving supplies (for shaving nicks.)

On a similar note, vetrinarian's offices, pet stores and animal groomer's use

styptic pencils on a regular basis. Animals have a vein in their nails and if

clipped to short it bleeds. Styptic pencils are used to stop the bleeding.

Dear ,

Still around in the stores, eh? Well I will have to get one before I

shave my legs again! Hee!

Still unsanitary and not worth sharing your " styptic pencil " with

anyone else (okay...well may be your dog!).

Okay so now we know the real scoop on the styptic pencils. Dave do

you want a manicure now? :)

Love yas!
