Hi -

" yes, atlanto-axial instability is inherant to SED, for one. It means

that there is a problem at the C1 and C2 vertebrae. In other words, the

small bone (odontoid process) protruding up from C2, which goes through

a small hole in C1, on which the head sits and pivots, is

underdeveloped. (in the case of SED, it might not have calcified, or

turned into bone yet). Contact sports and tumbling are out, because C1

could slip off of C2, thus pinching the spinal cord. Often times, if the

instability is severe enough, a fusion of C1/C2 will be performed. "

Hi,

I just wanted to inform the list that in no way did I mean any

disrespect toward our members of the dwarf community whom b/c of

complications inherent to their dwarfism, are in fact are unable to do

certain things.  Please accept my apology if I offended anyone of the people

who fit into this category.   I was just saying that those of us who are

otherwise healthy should not be afraid to try new things and always think of

themselves as a member of the  human species first and people affected by

dwarfism second.  Never underestimate what you can and cannot do unless you

have a medical condition that could endanger your life by participating in a

certain activity.  I know most people w/ bone dysplasias should be careful

with the way they treat their bodies and somethings like bungee jumping may

be out of the question, but it gets so monotonous to continously get posts

about just trivial things that are always related back to our condition.   I

am just saying let's live and celebrate life rather than being so afraid all

the time.  Life is an adventure to be enjoyed!!!   Also, Helen I am sorry for

writing both personally and publicly to the list, but I thought the list

should know my feelings on this topic.  I'm just trying to say lighten up and

I don't have anything personal against you I just think some of your posts

are a bit over the top.  Please don't be offended.  Try to quit thinking so

much about being a dwarf and more about being human and life will be much

much much easier.   Dwarfism is a part of us; this  I don't deny, but from

your posts it seems as if your whole life revolves around the fact that you

are a dwarf- maybe I'm being presumptuous, but that is the impression that I

get.   Again, my apologies to anyone on this list whom I may have offended.

I realize that some of us are luckier than others; luckier, not better and I

am thankful for what I have and also believe any of us w/ physical

limitiations can enjoy a good quality life w/ some precautions.  That is all.

Have a great day and upcoming holiday!
