Guest guest
Hi , I've been getting raw goat milk for about a month now. I was told that the goat herself can make a difference in the taste, but also that the goat milk will start to get " goaty " on about the third day. I don't know why it does that. I believe pasteurizing it will prevent this, but we don't want to do that. I don't know if there is anything else you can do. In our house, when the milk starts to get that stronger flavor, I use it for baking with no funny taste at all. I think it makes very nice Piima milk, so I also do that if I have goat milk left that's getting a stronger flavor. Our 18 year old won't touch it anyway, and our 12 year old really wants to, as she likes the concept of raw milk and real food. She's still trying to adapt to the different taste. It's sweet, but a little more salty somehow, than the milk flavored drink we get from the store :-) I think she'll manage. Keep trying! This may be hard if you can't pick up your goat milk often enough. I hope it works out for you. I have come to really love the goat milk, and I was a little distrustful of the taste at first myself. I start each day with a cold glass of it. Laurie
Guest guest
I just talked to a woman who is getting sheep's milk from an undisclosed source (darn it!) in Sonoma co. She says that it does not have a goaty taste and that it weighs in at 13 1/2% milkfat! Is that possible? That would be quite a head of cream. Does anyone get sheep's milk out there? Also I hear that mare's (horse's) milk is the thing in Russia - supposed to be the closest to human milk....
Guest guest
Hi , I've also been getting raw goats milk for the last few months. From what I've read, the milk should start out non-goaty tasting and it does get more goaty the longer it is kept. If your milk tastes goaty from day one, that means the male goats were not kept away from the milk goats. They have a very strong odor and it can taint the milk. So, because the goat lady is an hour away, I get alot and freeze it in quart canning jars, so it is used up pretty quickly (usually before it gets really goaty tasting). But when I want to drink some and it tastes a bit strange, I just make a carob syrup with honey, carob powder, and vanilla extract and stir that in and it tastes fine. Hope this helps, Becky > Hi everyone, > I'm new to using goats milk, but found a source for raw goats milk so I am trying it. > > Does all goats milk have that " goaty taste " to it that seems to get stronger and stronger as the milk sets or is that associated with the breed of goat or their feed or any other factors which I may not be aware of? > > I drank it fine on the first several days but now with that flavor quite strong I don't find it very palatable and I don't want to give it too my kids so as not to turn them off forever. > > Is there anything to do to stop the flavor from changing like that and why does it happen in the first place? > > Thanks for any info from any of you goat experts out there. > --
