Hi Mike/Anita-

Just in case the whacky computer artifacts in J's response to

questions 3 and 4 confused you I'll answer questions 3 & 4 again.

3. What volume of 5% sodium hypochlorite is required to prepare 1 L

if 0.1% sodium hypochlorite disinfecting solution?

A: Use the Percent Solutions Formula

total vol. required...............x=volume needed

__________________........=.....__________________

% on hand..........................%wanted

1000ml.............X..........

_________...=...__________

5%.................0.1%

x=20ml of the 5% sodium hypochlorite is needed. (add 980ml of water

or solution of choice for a final volume of 1000ml)

***************************************************************

4. What volume of 36% trichloroacetic acid solution is needed to

prepare 120ml of 10% trichloroacetic acid?

A: solve this in the same manner as shown above.

120ml................X.....

__________..=..______________

36%...............10%

X=33.33 ml (add 86.67 mls of water or solution of choice for a final

volume of 120ml)

Hope this helps.

would be asking my pharmacist. But I have been off on medical leave

these last few weeks with my son. I was feeling pretty confident

until I took the on line test at PTCB. Thanks for all the great stuff

that was posted yesterday. These following have me stumped. Can any

one help. Percents were barely covered in the book that I bought. And

percents are driving me crazy. Thanks mcorbus

ARRRGGG!! Blasted advertisement messed up my formula structure.

Hopefully the second example clarified things. Here's another way to

look at it: the % you want multiplied by the Volume required, divided

by the % you have on hand = the volume of the % on hand you will need.

What volume of 5% sodium hypochlorite is required to prepare 1 L

> if 0.1% sodium hypochlorite disinfecting solution?

0.1(%) x 1000(ml)/ 5(%)= 20(ml) You'll need to use 20ml of the 5%

sodium hypochlorite.

I will be taking my exam April 24th I have come across the following math

questions and can not figure them out.

How much of a D20W 1000ml and D5W 1000ml is needed to make a D8.5W 400ml?

The answer is: 93.3ml / 306.7ml

Also, this question: A physician writes an order for Aminosyn 2.5% 500ml, you

look on the shelf and have only 8.5% 1000ml. How are you going to prepare this

order using a sterile evacuated container? The answer is: Add 147ml of

Aminosyn 8.5% and qs with sterile water to 500ml

I would appreciate any help I can get with these two problems, Thank You

Dear " mkw_texas " ,

The following Tutorial that I posted many years ago, will best explain how to

solve this type of problem. The site forum can not accept the diagram that

is needed to solve this problem using alligation method. Here is the directory

and the link to the Math Only file that contains the Alligation method:

Files > 5- Tutorial-1 & Study Information > S 8- Math Tutorials Only > 4.

Alligations > Alligation II

ial%20-%20Alligation%20II%20Updated%20Word%20Copy.doc

The first problem you posted will need to be solved by Alligation II, however

the second problme can be solved by Alligation #1 or %1 x Qty 1 = %2 x

Qty (which you may see written with different symbols to mean the same thing).

The answers given in your book or source are correct.

The second question can be solved using the alligation method #1

8.5%------------8.5%

2.5 X 500ml

8.5

147.06 ml of 8.5% solution. Place in the evac bottle and add enough water to

make 500ml. OR subtract 147.06 from 500 and you will get the EXACT amount of ml

of water to add.

Hope this helps,

While being logged into the study site you will have to copy and paste the

second link into your own browser, as it did not come out totally active or

highlighted.
