Guest guest
Did anyone answer Tim's post about making Chemo drugs? If so I missed it. I was really surprised to find a hospital in our area that has non-certified techs making Chemo drugs. Is this the normal practice? They said that most of their tech were not certified. Only 2 of 9 total. That all techs have to make Chemo drugs. Is this the norm around the country? I thought for certain you would have to either be certified or a Tech 2 like they had told us in the classroom. Any thoughts on this subject? Guest guest
Dear Lousie and All, I think Dora gave some great links to information regarding Chemo. Please see her previous post on this. PTCB Certification is not required by most states. Education is also not required by most states. However TRAINING in chemo and IV sterile prep IS usually done at the hospital or pharmacy. And many 'in-house' certification programs exist. What I teach in California is this: here are the basic concepts about chemotherapy. Now you will probably NOT be required to make chemos until you can prove that you can make great IV's with great aseptic technique. This may take 6 months to 2 yrs of continuous IV work. I addition they may pay a tech more or NOT to do IV's or Chemos. In addition they MUST train you MORE than what I am teaching you here. In addition, you may work somewhere in which EVERY tech does EVERY Ting called 'cross training' or you may work some where in which specific titles are bestowed upon the techs that differentiates their type of work or specialty. So there may be 'chemo techs' or all techs may make chemos. Tech I or Tech II or Tech III or Tech IV are not universal titles. they do not mean the same in different institutions or states. Hope this helps, Respectfully, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Founder/Owner Pharm Tech Educator blossoms2u@... wrote: Did anyone answer Tim's post about making Chemo drugs? If so I missed it.
