Dear All,

As you know I do private tutoring as well.

The following questions have been asked of me in a private email.

Some people are shy. Others know other people on the site and do not

want them to know what they know and do not know. For what ever

reason some one would send me questions in a private email that is

their business. However I felt the need to share the questions with

you all as you may benefit also. ( I will not reveal the name of the

author of the email). I took the liberty of including my answers

here also:

" HI,

I am having trouble w/ some math problems.

1. You receive an order for Amoxil 200 mg PO qid for 10 days.

Your supply is a suspension of 50 mg /2ml . The quantity dispensed

is: "

Jeanetta's Answer:

200mg/dose x 4 doses /day x 10 days = 8000mg

Solve by Ratio Proportion:

50mg......8000 mg

----- = ----------

2 ml........ X ml

2 x 8000 / 500 = 320 ml

Dispense: 320 ml

Note this is 320 ml / 30ml/ounce = 10.7 ounces

" 2. 500 MCL OF U-100 INSULIN IS EQUAL TO: "

Jeanetta's Answer:

A poor question since Insulin is usually ordered in units and

usually calculated in ml or cc, NOT mcL !!!l But if it is in your

study book must know I will do it:

1 Liter = 1000 mL = 1,000, 000 mcL (microliters)

Regular insulin is 100 units per ml

Which is

100 units.........100 units

---------- = -------------

1 ml.............1000 mcL

OR 1units/ 10mcL OR 0.1unit/mcL

Therefore:

1 unit......X units

------- = ----------

10 mcL.....500 mcL

1 x 500/10 = 50 units

Note this equals ½ or 0.5 ml or cc

" 3. A 1 L IV Bag contains 1,000,000 U OF Penicillin G K. The

flow rate of the solution is 25 gtt/min, and the infusion set is

labeled 15gtt/ml. The dose that the patient receives per hour is? "

Jeanetta's Answer:

Hint Flow rate problems are easily answered when you set up the

problem to solve for what should be in the denominator (bottom)and

what should be in the numerator (top).

Example this question means: means the number of Units/ hour.

Therefore we examine the units in the problem and find we do

have " units of PCN " but the time is in `minutes' so the set up

will be first it `units of PCN' over minutes, then converted to

hours.

1,000,000 units of PCN...25 gtt......1 ml....60 min

---------------------- x---------x -------x --------- =

1000 ml...................1 min.....15 gtt.........1 hour

Answer: 100,000 Units per hour

Note: at this rate it is running at 100cc per hour and the bag would

take 10 hours to run out.

See below:

1,000,000 units / 100,000 units/hour = 10 hours.

1000 ml / 10 hours = 100 ml /hour

" 4. You have a solution of heparin that is 100,000 U/L with an

infusion apparatus labeled 60 gtt/ml. The flow rate required to

deliver a dose of 20 U/min would be? "

Jeanetta's Answer:

Hint Flow rate problems are easily answered when you set up the

problem to solve for what should be in the denominator (bottom)and

what should be in the numerator (top).

Example this question means: means the number of gtts/ min.

60 gtts.....20 Units....100,000 Units......12 gtts

-------- x---------- x -------------- = --------- = 12gtts/min

1 ml.........1 min........1000 ml...........1 min

" 5. You prepare a 250 ml bag of NS W/ 1G of KEFZOL. The patient

is to receive a 250 mg dose per hour. The infusion set is calibrated

at 10gtt/ml the flow rate needed to deliver the dose is? "

Jeanetta's Answer:

Hint Flow rate problems are easily answered when you set up the

problem to solve for what should be in the denominator (bottom) and

what should be in the numerator (top).

Example this question means: means the number of gtts/ min.

10 gtt.....250 mg......1 hr

------- x -------- x --------- = 41.67 gtts/min

1 ml..........1 hr....60 min

Note this rate is a common " TKO " or TKVO " or " KO " rate or what is

known as to keep the vein open. It is a slow rate.
