Dear Debbie and all,

I am brining your reply of example questions or problems to the TOP of the post.

In this way one does not have to 'search' for it.

#1.

Cortisporin otic susp drops 10ml

Sig: 3-4 gtts au qid

#2

Albuterol MDI #2

Sig: iii-iv puffs po q6h prn sob

Debbie WHAT is meant by MDI #2?

Thanks for your input and participation in the study site.

Respectfully,

Dear Debbie,

Regarding the following problem:

" Cortisporin otic susp drops 10ml

Sig: 3-4 gtts au qid "

It would help 'crystal " and others if you would post the amount of drops per ml

that you are using as a K. Are you using 12 gtts/ml? or 15gtts/ml? Both are used

in the industry.

Once she knows the K then she can figure out the gtt/day.

This is correct IF and only IF K = 20 gtts/1ml. I thought eye drops were usually

15 or 12 gtts/1ml

1) 10 x 20= 200 : 32 drops a day= 6.25 or 6 days supply

Any way you got the math correct. so what ever the K equals you CAN do this math

the same way as you did this.

you gave an excellent answer.

My back ground is also in retail and I was always taught and still teach my

students that you assume 1 gram per application unless you know something

different. Such as Eurax (for Scabies and Lice) would be the whole tube in

one application. You don't always know how much body area the patient is

going to apply could be a finger or a whole leg.

For eye drops viscosity does come into play and I have heard up to 60gtts/ml

but we would average.

If it was antibiotics (or similar) we would put 7-10 days since this is the

average duration of therapy (I said average)

For glaucoma- Xylatan a 2.5 bottle is designed to last for 30 days since you

only use 1 drop OU QD and there will be some left over in case the patient

misses. One time I worked with a pharmacist who got the bottle out and

counted the drops in front of the patient to prove there was enough in a

full bottle. He stopped after 60 drops and there was still some liquid left.

It was well worth the wasted medication to get the customer to stop yelling

and this person was well known for trying to get free stuff from us by

yelling.

For others I would average a 10 ml bottle to last 30 days, of course you

would have to look at the amount of drops they are using. Every drop is

different so you have to use common sense a 15 ml bottle used 1 gtt ou qd

will last well over a month.

With ear drops most are also only used for 7-10 days so we would use that as

an average days supply.

Yes , most of the time the computer will help you out.

Unfortunately does not help those who will be taking the PTCB when they ask such

type of questions. I think you would get no more than one of the day supply for

a cream or ointment questions, unless they actually gave you how long a portion

of it would last or give the drip constant,so that you could set up a

ratio/proportion.

Yes Debbie,

The PTCB ecam will give you the gtts per ml....it will not assume any particular

K or constant.
