Retail techs - you should be hearing more and more questions about natural

medicines such as these.

• Theaflavin is now showing up in supplements promoted for lowering

cholesterol and other uses. Theaflavin is a polyphenol formed from tea catechins

during the fermentation process. Fermented tea (black tea) contains higher

concentrations of theaflavin compared to partially fermented (oolong tea) or

non-fermented tea (green tea). Theaflavin seems to have antioxidant,

anti-inflammatory, and other effects. Preliminary clinical research shows that a

green tea extract enhanced with theaflavin modestly reduces cholesterol levels.

Theaflavin looks promising, but more evidence is needed.

• Weil Juvenon Healthy Aging Support is now being promoted for healthy aging,

improving brain cell function, sustaining energy levels, and preventing cellular

aging. Its main ingredients include alpha-lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine.

These ingredients have antioxidant effects, are involved with energy production

in cells, and might have a role in improving cognitive function in older people

and patients with dementia. The next step will be to see if science can prove

positive outcomes for the aging process, energy, or overall health.

• Chocolate (Theobroma cacao) is getting more support for its role in lowering

blood pressure. The latest research shows that consuming either dark or milk

chocolate 46-105 grams daily providing 213-500 mg of chocolate polyphenols

modestly lowers systolic blood pressure by about 5 mmHg and diastolic by about 3

mmHg. Explain to patients who want to incorporate a little chocolate into their

diet to go ahead...in moderation. A single chocolate serving (about 40 grams)

provides about 200 calories. Recommend chocolate that contains the beneficial

polyphenols such as Hershey's Cacao Reserve 65% Extra Dark Chocolate,

Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate 60% Cacao, or others. Milk chocolate contains the

polyphenols, but generally less than dark chocolate.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely

in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways,

champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up,

totally worn out and screaming " WOO HOO - what a ride! "
