Guest guest
I'm not sure if this has been discussed before so excuse me if it's a repeat. I receive my recertification today from PTCB and in the FAQ section it reads: How does the new ACPE rule affect how I earn and submit CEs for my recertification? PTCB has no plans to revise its CE policy; thus, we will continue to accept all CE designated for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. , NJ
Guest guest
Dear All, I reported this in my web casting CE presentation on HOT TOPICS for Pharmacy Technicians in Feb of this year. The change was mainly for pharmacists so that they would not waste their time on tech only CE when they need pharmacist CE. Another reason was to be sure that techs do not take CE that is out of scope of practice for them (such as counseling). Some of you may recall that I had written a published article in the April 2006 for Drug Topics, requesting that the pharmacists do not deny techs PharmD CE's because otherwise I would not be where I am today (not as knowledgeable not as effective as teacher etc) There was much discussion on this topic among many prof associations in 2006 and 2007, last year. I have noticed the actual labeling of the target audience with the -T or - P at the end of the number (hard to miss). Since the change this year I have noticed less FREE tech only CE's. I have also noticed MORE titles that begin with 'The Role of the Pharmacist ...... " To be honest so far I have not done many CE this year. I am concerned when I see a title that says " Pharmacists Role...... " , especially if and it is something that I think I would like to know more about. Since I am supposed to assist my pharmacist, how can I do that if I do know know his or her 'role' in a specific task job function or ??? There may be roles that the pharmacist has that I have nothing to do with per se, but I must support the pharmacist and know about them, even if that means telling the patient at the window the pharmacist can not be disturbed right now, but if you can wait 5 minutes or ? He/ She will get back to you when they finish doing XYZ. Such as in the case of giving a flu shot. That is my role: to know how to best assist my pharmacist. I may not understand how to do what he/she does, I may not do what he or she does, but I have to know what it is that he or she is doing. I may not be allowed to give the injection, but I should know that they can, will, how to assist them, know how long it will take them (on an average) so I can better serve the patients and the pharmacist. I will need to know where the vaccines are kept, to get them ready for t he pharmacist, get needle and syringe and pt paper work/consent form ready. Yet there are some CE's that are only for pharmacists on this topic. I would love to hear from all of you how this has affected you to. So , this is what it means: While ACPE has designated that CE for techs must have a T, the PTCB is ignoring this and saying that they will accept any CE for pharmacists too! YEAH! that makes me glad! But then HOW does one get a pharmacist CE if you can not take it if you are a Tech and it has a P on it? That's my question! So IF I wanted to take a CE for pharmacists only, I could not because I have to be a Pharm D to take it (ACPE) but if I could take it PTCB would accept it,even though ACPE does not approve it for techs? Weird huh? Again so far I have not had a problem because I have not attended a pharmacist/tech seminar. That will be in October 30 days before my cert is due. I'll know then. If I could make NPTA or AAPT conventions (which at this time I can not) I would definitely have no problem, since they are all for Techs anyway. Looking forward to hearing from other techs. Anyone experience wanting to take a Pharm D title and could not? I take many CE from Pharm Con, I have noticed the CE for both will have two numbers one for each . Actually the same number but the T or P will be changed. Guest guest
This year I did all my CE at powerpak. Even the CE beginning with titles such as " The Role of the Pharmacist . . . " are allowed for technicians. Before you take the exam, there is a small section where you enter your profession. For the CE I did, most of the professions were RPh, Technician, Nurse, and Physicians Assistant. The only difference was the ending of the CE number. RPh and Tech had the same numbers except for P or T at the end. And honestly, they would not have known if I had mistakenly checked RPh. The Nurse and Physicians Assistant numbers were completely different. But the tests are the same for all of us. Who is the ruling party when it comes to grading the CE? Not the ACPE. It's the CE provider. And as far as I have seen, they do not check ID at the door before letting anyone in. And PTCB will accept any CE that a technician completes as long as its for pharmacists or technicians. Guest guest
Thanks for your input ! I have taken many CE for Pharmacists in the past before the new P/T designations online. Some asked for license numbers and of course I could not take those. Most did not, but required that I lie and state that I am a Pharmacist. But at least I took them and gained the knowledge. (So sue me for being thirsty for knowledge). My MAIN concern is attending LIVE CE for pharmacists at a convention that have traditionally allowed techs. The CSHP yearly convention usually held during pharmacy week has offered CE for pharmacists, but allowed techs to attend together, as well as simultaneously offering a tech track, as well as pharmacist only workshops. I have usually opted to attend the pharmacist CE. Wondering now if the ACPE rating system will change this. ONLY time will tell. So I will let you all know in October. Last October I did not see a tech track. But that was before the change with the P/T identifiers. We shall see. Thank. Anyone have any negative experience? Guest guest
Dear Karin, Thanks for your input. I think if we see any changes it will come about NEXT year the year that people have to turn in CE AFTER the implementation of the new rating of CE. Why? because face it most people wait until the last minute to do CE. Therefore those due this year probably already have half of it done and will search for the CE but those for next year will scramble to find the right CE at the last minute. So IF there are going to b e any problems we will most likely hear of it at the second part of this year or the beginning of next year. Jut my own opinion of possible changes in the future.
