Dear All,

If you are in school, just on the job for the first time, or studying

for the PTCB examto get a job as a pharmacy technician you may want

to take a look at the following sites that I have specifically posted

that outline tech duties (including nuclear tech).

-You may want to add www.pharmacytrainer.com They have a study guide

which can be accessed on line or you can purchase the manual, a CD-

ROM or both. The web access has instant feed-back on your answers

and seems to be quite complete and extensive. It is $60.00 for the

web program for 4 months access. Relatively inexpensive I think.

Considering I have already gotten more out of it then the nearly

$200.00 in study guides I have purchased.

Now I would also say that $60, similar to a good book, is a good

price if you get your monies worth! I would say the instant feed

back feature is great. My question is can you copy and paste for

your own personal reference from this or is it

instantaneously 'gone' from your screen only to be accessed for

instant feedback at a later time? Is it a live person that you get

as in a study group to continue your question (like here) or is it a

list of questions that give you and analysis of your answer and why

it is wrong if it is?

--No live feed back and I have not tried the cut and paste yet. You

can go back to any portion of a chapter for refresher. I also have

purchased numerous study guides and am hpoing for my live feedback

when necessary from here and the other tech sites I have been

accessing (techlectures and others). Also the many excellent RPh's

and PharmD's that I am lucky to be working

with.

Dear EK,

These sites are OFFICIAL and can help you to determine if this is the right

career path for you.

What a tech can do varies from state to state. The sites below are a compound of

information of laws/regs/requirements for all states.

Licensure or Registration and certification requirements are also regulated by

states and different from state to state. Please go to the state board of

pharamcy online for the state you live in for the specific requirements for your

state. You may also post the state you wish to work in and perhaps we can give

you an 'idea' but you will still need to go throught your state's board of

basic retail pharmacy technician duties are:

input patient information in computer system (in window) - a new patient in a

particular pharmacy is usually asked if they have any allergies towards any

medications, name, DOB, insurance card, address, phone...also you will deal with

refills.either in person or fax, phone..(theres times where you will get a

authorized fax from the doctor to refill drug for patient)

dealing with insurance claims - some medications are not covered by a certain

insurance company so at times pharmacist checks the formulary list for approved

drugs for that certain insurance....also insurance might only allow a certain

quanity for a specific drug to be dispensed towards patient......

filling medications - you will at times encounter partial fill..meaning the

pharmacy might not have the full quanity of medication for patient so they will

give half of the medication they have untill stock is replenish. also when

filling make sure you check twice the name of patient and the drug name to be

dispense for that particular patient to prevent medication errors...........

ordering medications for stock - there will always be medications that will run

out quickly...usually the pharmacist will tell you to write down certain meds to

order at the end of the day....mckesson is a popular manufacture company to

order meds.

maintaining pharmacy clean - you are usually assigned to your own shelf to keep

clean, also just keeping pharmacy clean when you have a chance makes workplace

less stressful...pharmacists do not like papers scattered all over the counters

it faustrates them...lol

patient medication check out (out window) - always double check the right name

and the drug for the medication to be dispensed.at the cash register..you

usually have to ask them their address to verify. this is where usually all the

questions they have about their meds come out (pharmacist is only required to

councel patients about their meds, not you. you can only answer questions like

whats the generic name of the drug, or what is my history of meds, easy simple

stuff like that)..always keep patient info confidential...

compounding medications - double check what ingredients you need and check if

you have the ingredients in stock before you start. everything is all recorded

in a sheet

answering incoming and outcoming calls- many nurses call to ask about the

history of meds that their patient took or taking (you do have access to give

this type of info, make sure it is from a healthcare setting so you wont give

out patient info to a stranger). some doctors would even call for that

too....for a new prescription over the phone only the pharmacist can take the

order..not you....also patient are going to call to ask questions about their

meds or recommendations...(pharmacists can only give drug recommendations) but

you can answer their drug questions..for example ...does my medication cause

drowsiness?

inventory - check out of date meds, order meds, stock new meds on shelf, file

patient medication bag in bin, doing the employess working chart..so much

more................

for licensure i know you have to be 16 years of age and up..for first time

licensure it cost $40.00..then the next year will be $25.00 if im not mistaken.

and high school diploma is a requirement..and not having a felony is a

requirement..but i think every state has their own requirements...check what

your state requires just in case

As a hospital pharmacy technician, I consider my main duty is to get the drug to

the patient. I think that's what I was hired to do.

Running automated equipment, such as Pyxis dispensing machines, requires

a working knowledge of the software and hardware. Robot dispensing machines,

such as our Swisslog, runs pretty much by itself, but needs a human to maintain

it. (Well, we're good for something.) Knowing when to call support is a good

thing.

Every facility has its own specific operating policies. The best advice I can

give is to learn each resonsibility so that you are proficent in each task.

Don't be afraid to ask for help.
