Hi Everyone

I have been ill and have been out of it . I did get my Plavix filled today

and was able to get the generic one more time. I am on Medicare and the

generic was free for me! My most expensive drug and I should have figured

something like this would happen. Please enlighten me on what happened. I

know

there was a law suit but that is it.

We got the generic a few days ago. At our store there are only about

20 dollars difference in the price of it vs. brand...... customers

so far is all about the name brand because they trust it. How long

has Norvasc actually been out so far? The pharmacist thought it has

not been quite 10 yrs yet.

only? that's a sizeable difference to me. Since its

on generic it would have to be at least that long

(depends on when they filed the patent. correct me if

i'm worng, but i think patents last 17 years, and some

of that time is in the clinical trials before the FDA

apporves it for general use.)

Patents last 20 years now. When you and I were in school they lasted 17, law was

changed a while back.

Hi Jeanetta,

The Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act allows a

product to have a patent right of 20 years with the

possibility of a 2 year extension. In all cases, the total

patent life for the product cannot exceed 14 years from the

product's approval date, or, in other words, 14 years of

exclusive marketing time.

Thanks for the more indepth explanation, Joe.

So what does this discussion have to do with the person studying for

the PTCB exam?

For those studying for the PTCB exam, if you come across a questiona

bout teh length of time that the patent law is the answer would be 20

yrs not 17.

The caveot of 14 year + 2 yr extension would most likely not be on the

PTCB exam, but would be on the Pharm D licensing NAPLEX or

jursiprudence (state law) exam.

PS especially to all oldtimers of this site:I am now trying to relate

every post that I can that is not specifically a study question to

those who are studying due to an email that I got today. I will share
