You don't have to be certified in Texas. Your Certified Technician

comes from passing the PTCB.

You do have to register in Texas to practice as a Technician.

You can go to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy Website (

http://www.tsbp.state.tx.us/ ), then click on Pharmacy Technicians and

Trainees.

You'll have to put in information about the high school that you

attended, etc, etc.

Dera Annette and Della,

Does one have to be working in a trainee position in Texas in order to become

Texas registered? Does one actually have to go through a training or can they

get the CPhT via self study then apply for registration and 'hope' that someonw

willhire them? I am looking for some clarification here.

I had a student who moved and she will take the exam in Texas, but did

training and schooling here. Will that count instead of training on the job in

Texas?

Thanks

Jeanetta,

In Texas, a technician does not have to have " official " schooling to

become certified or registered.

To become certified, you have to pass the PTCB.

To become registered, once you pass the PTCB, you then register with

the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP)

A Technician in Training also now has to register with the Texas State

Board of Pharmacy by February 1st, 2007 in order to work in the

pharmacy as a trainee.

Once a Technician in Training (Or Technician Trainee) passes the PTCB,

I'm not sure if they have to fill out the whole of the Technician

Registration or if they can just do a supplement to the Technician

Trainee registration to update to a Registered Technician.

I'll learn more about that in the next few months....

Dear Della,

I understand what you wrote. However what about this scenario:

A Texan self-studies. Passes the PTCB and gets teh CPhT behind his/her name.

Now they can apply to become registered. Do they become registered and now

a pharmacy can hire them as a tech OR must they do the 'in-training' thing

even though they have the PTCB CPhT?

In other words is on the job TRAINING NECESSARY or just the PTCB necessary to

become registered and then work in a pharmacy?

Thanks

Jeanetta,

There is no formal Pharmacy education required to become a Certified

Tech in Texas.

The Registration issue is more about record keeping and criminal

background checks.

I had to register to be a tech in training. That

certificate is good for 2 years. It was free. Do I

still have to register again? That registration says

tech in training though. The other techs at work told

me it would cost about $265.00 to register. I kept

asking them if they were joking or what was going on.

Make sure you are registered with the state of Texas not your employer

(who may also have another registration process) but the states

Yes, Annette is correct. If you have any questions about the rules for

registration and changes, please read the newsletters that are listed on the

Bobby,

Good to hear from you.

I went to the Texas state board site and could not find how the state

of Texas handles the person who is PTCB certified, experienced as a

pharm tech inanother state, no schooling or trainign that is

documented, but candocument experience with letters from former

employers. Does THIS person moving to Texas have to do a trainee

program??? or just register as a tech?

In Ca the reason they added attend school or PTCB certified is for

those who moved to the state from a state where there was no

requirement but they have experience. However this is considered

prejudice so the state then mad ethe option for everyone. I hate that

but that is the way it is.

Anyone from Texas know this answer?

Thanks

YES Christian! I KNOW and understand that Texas does not require

formal education. But the question I have concerns 'transplants' who

aera already PTCB certified = people who move to Texas OR Texans who

self-study and take the PTCB exam.

It seems to me that the ONLY requirement to becoming registered in

Texas is PTCB certified NOT training! It appears that if you register

to become a trainee, then within 2 yrs you must pass the PTCB inoreder

to register to become a tech who can work as a tech. Therefore What is

the law for one who already is a tech and is PTCB certified and moves

to Texas? Do they have to go through a training again? IF so where

does it say that in the law? I can not find that. Further, IF a TEXAN

self-studies and passes the PTCB exam, is proof of that all that they

need to register as a tech? Would any Texan pharmacy hire them?

Thanks

Dear Beth,

Are you saying that you are in Texas?

Are you saying that you have not done any on the job training in Texas with a

tech trainee registration?

Are you also saying that you have passed PTCB and are waiting for the actual

paper cert in the mail AND you want to know IF you can get hired with that?

The answer to the latter is you can apply to register with the PTCB.

But what remains a mystery to me is if you still need to go through the on the

job training with a training registration first before applying for pharm tech

registration. This is what I am trying to find out for you and others.

One must complete training before 2 yrs, get ptcb before 2 yrs (in the state of

Texas),BUT there is NO minimum of training time! What is that all about? Doesn't

that say then that training is not required?

Someone help these people and me to understand!

Jeanetta,

The only requirement to Register in Texas is to be a CPhT. Texas does not

require training or experience. All that is needed is to have passed the

PTCB exam and have your CPhT number when completing the registration

application form. The only question I have is when the technician moving?

The registration process does take some time. I am not sure how long now.

This technician might want to e-mail or phone the Texas State Board and ask

when to submit the application.

Ah ha!!!

Sooooooooooooooo it is true that Texas does not require eithe training or

education to be a Texas Pharmacy Technician.

It is true that inorder to become a tech one MAY do training but all that

is required is passing the PTCB and then registering as a pharmacy technician.

In this case, would the 'average' pharmacist hire someone who is self -studied

PTCB passed CPhT registered in the state of Texas??? or do they prefer to train

them themselve?? or do most Rph want trained over non - trained NEW registered

techs? Any preference?

In otherwords is there any advantage for the TEXAN to go through on the job

training + PTCB then registration as a tech VS no ojt + PTCB + registration as a

tech in the state of Texas?

Thanks for your help.

OUR email posts got crossed in the electronic mail at the same time. Disregard

this post since you answered it below!!!!

Do you find it easier to train techs with or without the training?

What does it depend upon? Intellect, passing of an inhouse exam, gut feeling

during an interview? desire to continue to beome a pharmacist???

Thanks for your input,

I did my OJT 19 years ago and the R.Ph I worked with preferred that. I also

became certified in 1993 when I passed the Illinois test. However, things

have changed with the OJT and I am not up to date on what is coming about in

feb 2007. To be hired as a technician in Texas your must be CPhT and

registered. It is the law. As for techs in training, there was a one year

time frame in which a tech could be trained (OJT)but in Feb that changes. I

am not familiar with what that change will be.

As for formal, self study or ojt being preferred, I think that is up the in

individual who is hiring.

requirement but they have experience. However this is considered

prejudice so the state then mad ethe option for everyone. I hate that

but that is the way it is.

Anyone from Texas know this answer?

Thanks

became certified in 1993 when I passed the Illinois test.

Re: question for techs in

texas..............

Hey Jeanetta,

I can answer all of your questions accurately to end the confusion!

First of all, if you have any answers about the T.A.C. (Texas

Administrative Code... State Law) concerning Technicians or

Pharmacists PLEASE... PLEASE... PLEASE JUST ASK ME!!!!!

It is quite possibly an easier task to catch a Great White Shark in

the Sahara desert without a fishing pole than it is to find out

something from any Texas state bureaucracy online experience!

And by phone???? 512-385-1000????

Forget about it unless you have free long distance, a couple of days

to 'blow', and AN EXTREME AMOUT OF PATIENCE!!!

If you are moving to Texas from a state that requires Certification

to work as a Technician, OR you worked for a company that required

PTCB Certification in a state that does not, you DO NOT UNDER ANY

CIRCUMSTANCES REGISTER IN TEXAS AS A TECHNICIAN IN TRAINING!!!!

As long as you are PTCB Certified, have 'proof' of completing a High

School Diploma of 'some sort' (ie. GED is O.K.) then you can

Register with the TSBP without any sort of Tech. In Training

nonsense.

I think that what you might find confusing is the wording of the

Statute:

" A Pharmacy Technician License in another state can not be

transfered to Texas "

This means that just because you used to live in a state that

requires registration or licensure/registration and your license to

practice as a Technician is in good standing in that state, TSBP

will not 'recognize' your licensure and immediately Register you.

You still have to meet the criteria set by TSBP to become registered

in Texas and pay the Texas state licensure fee.

One thing that is very important for people who are moving to Texas

is to immediately get a Texas Drivers License.

It is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to become Registered in Texas with out a

valid Texas Drivers License. (There are 2 exceptions: Foreign or

Student Visas or Active Duty Military ONLY if you are practicing on

a Federally owned facility ie. the Dispsary at Fort Hood or Brook

Army Medical Center)

Once you have your Texas Drivers 'papers' or application from D.P.S.

which will give you a temporary conditional 'Permit' and Texas

Drivers License number, you can go ahead and apply for state

Registraion via the TSBP website.

You will receive your Registraion information by mail to your TEXAS

address after you pay the fee and the state does its criminal

background and creit check on you and gives you the 'Green Light'.

Your are then 'employable' by a Pharmacy in the state of Texas.

Texas requires no proof of 'formal education' other than PTCB

Certification to become Registered.

Self-study vs. Community College/Vocational School education makes

no difference to your standing in Austin. The only education that

Austin consideres at all is a High School Diploma.

I have no 'formal' CPhT education per se, yet my PTCB scores were

quite high. I have good credit and no arrest record, so Registration

was no problem.

As far as obtaining employment as a Tech. without 'Formal

Education'...

That is at the discretion of the employer.

Please disregard the 'Technician In Training TSBP Designation' as

once you are PTCB Certified and you Register, you can work in any

Pharmacy as a Tech (EXCEPT for Nuclear Med. which requires some

Federal paperwork) for any Phamacy that will hire you.

The 'Technician In Training Designation' is a 'Loop-Hole' in the Law

which allows for some 'discretion' in employment in certain areas of

Texas, or for Clerks who are in some sort of formal training program

to become Technicians or pass the PTCB.

I hope I clarified more than confused.

Jeaneta,

If you want a REALLY GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW TEXAS STATE

GOVERNMENT 'WORKS', reread the following part of my last post:

" It is ABSOLUTELY impossible to become Registered in Texas without a

valid Texas Drivers License. (There are 2 exceptions.... "

Welcome to Texas Government!

At least we were 'smart enough' not to vote in a Governor named

Kinky!

Merry Christmas!
