Guest guest
Hi Charity, I did seriously look into becoming a Pharmicist. I re-entered the work force after being a stay at home mom for 20yrs. I had a degree in Medical Technology but did not work very long before we started our family. I thought that working as a pharmacy technician was a good starting point...having be out of circulation for so long. I love the work. It is more enjoyable than Med Tech work because I love the science but I also love the customer contact. I don't love the pay.....that was my initial motivation. There is an accelerated program here for students who have 66 undergrad credits so I looked into it. It was a 3 full-year program. The downside was there was a statute of limtations on lab science and math courses of 10 years. I received my degree in '82! I would have to really start over. 3 years seemed manageable at " my age " ...6 years...not so much. So I'm determined to be the best technician I can. I'm taking the national exam in July and just studying because I enjoy it. Guest guest
Hi Charity, I am an adopted Southerner, you are so right - people from all segments of the population - rich/poor, educated and not use the term y'all. I urge Abe not to judge others by their vernacular. As far as your question regarding becoming a pharmacist - I originally began school at a Pharmacy College (one of the few where you entered freshman year and went 5 years - BS back then- without reapplying 3rd year). I was in a city I hated and stayed for two years. When I left the city and tried to reapply at another college, my GPA was not high enough to get in. I tried for a couple of years, but back then, I didn't know how to study (only needed to show up and pay attention and I did well in high school - college was very differnt). I changed majors and graduated with a BS. About 8 years later, I decided I was old enough to know how to study, and I went back to school with the intention of again, going to pharmacy school. My plan was to go through a pharm tech program, get a job and make good contacts that would get me good letters when I reapplied to school. While in school, I met someone who convinced me to consider Med school instead. I was swayed. I applied to Med school, of course, I do tend to procrastinate, and did that in this instance - I was accepted, but as an alternate, in the end, they didn't have a seat for me that year. I would have to reapply. While I was preparing to repeat the MCAT, I started teaching a Pharm Tech class. I found that teaching was something I never knew I was supposed to love. My thoughts on being a pharmacist - it is a personal decision. Personally, I've been the corporate route, made good money young and was miserable. I see some, put not significant for me, increase in intra-professional respect for Pharmacists. I am BIG on respect for the job I do. So - it comes down to job satisfaction. I love being a Tech and I love being an instructor even more. I feel that I am valued by my coworkers, including pharmacists and this gives me a high job satisfaction. If you are considering pharmacy school, you have the best wishes of those of us on this site. Having Pharmacists that " know where we are coming from " helps advance our drive to move pharm techs forward all the more. Well that's my story. Good luck in your search. Hope Y'ALL have a safe and happy holiday weekend! Guest guest
Excuse me? Maybe it's not formal English, but it is a popular word in southern states of the United States. I use it on a regular basis, and was born and raised in Texas. And actually, it's y'all, an abbreviation for You All. It's actually listed in the Meriam-Webster Online Dictionary. ( http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/y'all ). So have fun. Of course, a number of comments, jokes, etc that I make with customers/patients would probably be considered not acceptable by you. But the patients like me. Except for the fact that some of them think I'm a little too much of a stickler for the rules compared to my partner at work. Guest guest
Hi Charity, You are not the only person who uses that word : )......Many people use lots of words that aren't really words....In fact Americans don't really speak the original English....but rather a mutated version of what the English brought to this country....So whatever is acceptable where you live is good enough....Oh. I am from Oklahoma by the way....and to answer your question, I am considering pharmacy school....I have not even worked as a technician yet, but am working on getting the certification....I am 33 and was a stay at home mom for 9 years...I have taken some pre-pharmacy classes part-time...as my youngest child approaches school age, I look forward to attending school full time. Take care and best wishes on the exam, Bonnie

Guest guest
BTW, I was a pharmacy technician basically from the time I was 10 or 12. My mother's a pharmacist and my parents owned a pharmacy for 10 years. (There are no labor laws against your own kiddo's.) We (I say we often, b/c I'm a twin) used to help mother with input, inventory, etc, etc. It was just a part of life. I was actually pre-vet in college, and that's what I wanted to do. I couldn't get into Texas A & M Veterinary College (applied 5 years, interviewed 5 years, denied 5 years), and had always said I would go into Pharmacy if I didn't get into Veterinary within 2 years of getting my bachelors. I got my bachelor's in Animal Science in 1995. I started Pharmacy School in 1997. I graduated in 2003. I spent 6 years in a 4 year program. I spent 3 years as a 1st year student. But I made it. I passed the Boards. I'm a pharmacist now. It takes some determination. With the side note that I graduated 2nd in my class in High School, with over a 4.0 (we had extra credit classes that counted 5.0 and 6.0 in some cases, go figure). My undergrad gpa was a 3.45 over almost 200 hours. And I still got to spend 3 years as a 1st year Pharmacy Student. I'm one of those who also coasted through High School (and started college in the fall of 1990 as a Sophomore, b/c of the hours I picked up the Summer between my Jr and Sr year of High School, my Sr year of High School, and the Summer graduation). Go figure. As is life. I'm not saying it's easy, because it's obvious it's not. You have to be willing and determined. But you can survive it and come out fine. Time to change, go take care of some kitties, and go to work. At least the Wal-Mart Pharmacy is closed tomorrow, so I get to have the next 2 days off. (Since I'm generally off on Tuesdays anyhow!) Hope everyone has a quiet day, if that's what they want! Della Ever Thought of Being a Pharmacist? Any of yall who have been a Pharmacy Tech for so many years. Guest guest
Hi Jeanetta, We do have our dreams, but sometimes it is not about financial wealth or materialistic things. Our dreams can be about doing what we enjoy and living life to its fullest. As one who seems to have reversed the system by being a Pharmacist and now simply educating our future generation, I can truthfully say I am glad the turn in the road, life presented me. I do miss the potential income in practicing as a Pharmacist and oftentimes think of going back into counting pills & #133;..but, truth be told, in wealth I have it everyday when I realize that I am mentoring someone in the betterment of both his and her personal and professional lives. Sounds cliché but reality does place us here for a purpose and mine and yours is to inform, educate and lead some of our new generation into the profession they have chosen. Life is short and yes we may not be millionaires, but they don't take money where were going anyways. On the side.... you would of made a great Pharmacist! Guest guest
Dear Joe, It seems that we are both doing what we are cut out to do! And what is more we love teaching! I only hope that each and every tech that I teach/mentor loves pharmacy at least half as much as I do, if so it will be rewarding for them. Thank you for the compliment. Guest guest
