Guest guest
Try as I might, I've never been able to drink green tea. However, I have been taking green tea extract. Does anyone know if there are recommendations for how much to take and whether timing is critical for optimum effectiveness?

Guest guest
Bernie: I too find green tea tasteless. However I frequently add a teabag of a flavored herb tea to my green tea to improve the taste. Or: add a drop of two of vanilla. One of our local supermarkets has a house brand green tea " mint " flavor which I find palatable as well. on 9/22/2004 11:08 AM, bernadettepawlik@... at bernadettepawlik@... wrote: > Try as I might, I've never been able to drink green tea. Guest guest
I am not a big fan of supplementing, especially for something like tea, so good luck. There are many varieties of green tea, not to mention differences in flavor due to brewing strength. I would not be surprised if some of the benefit to tea consuming populations is the hot water also consumed. Unless you drink pure heated water, the tea will likely displace some other less desirable beverage. Of course only you know what you like but at least experiment with some properly prepared fine teas. Maybe even contact one of the popular tea sellers asking for recommendations based on your taste preferences. I have had good luck with http://www.specialteas.com but I'm sure there are any number of good vendors out there. JR -----Original Message-----From: bernadettepawlik@... Guest guest
My 3-year-old son takes green tea extract therapeutically, as does most of the population of children with his rare neurological disorder (Familial Dysautonomia or FD). The EGCG, an enzyme extracted from the tea, affects the genetic expression of IKAP protein, causing their bodies to make more of the normal form, needed by the cells of their nervous systems to function properly, and less of the mutated form that results from their disease and causes its symptoms. My son receives his with his morning tube feeding, which is a " formula " I make myself. We have had to reduce the dose from twice to once per day, and gradually reduce the size of the dose from 12 drops to 6 drops, because any more than we're giving him now, and he turns into an " Energizer Bunny " , with incredibly high energy levels and an inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. I believe there may be undisclosed high levels of caffeine in the extract. The brand is Nature's Answer Super Green Tea, which is standardized and has children's dosing on the label (e.g., 8-12 drops for 30-60 lbs, 12-16 drops for 60-90 lbs, 16-28 drops for 90+ lbs, to be taken twice daily). This particular product was manufactured to the specifications of the researcher who discovered the positive impact to genetic expression in FD. He's now trying to find a manufacturer who can make the extract without the " buzz " side effect. I drink any and all green tea, sometimes all day long, but my favorite is Constant Comment Green Tea by Bigelow, which tastes exactly like their regular Constant Comment made with black tea, which is to say that you would not know you are drinking green tea. It has a spicy, orange-y flavor. Plus, Bigelow teas are available in regular grocery stores. > Try as I might, I've never been able to drink green tea.
