Monkey CR Studies

Hi folks:

There is always this nagging issue for CRON about whether humans

(maximum lifespan) will be found to respond to CR in a manner similar

to the way mice do.

If we wait for a completed human study of maximum lifespan none of us

will be here to see it. We can wait for the results of the first

major monkey study. In ten years there will probably be some fairly

persuasive data - one way or the other.

But one of the things that intrigued me about the University College

London fruit fly study was that it showed it isn't absolutely

necessary to look only at maximum lifespan. You can get a clue early

on what the average and maximum lifespans are likely to be by looking

at fluctuations in mortality rates as time progresses. When they put

flies on CR at human equivalent age 60 their mortality rate dropped

80%. And when mice that had been on CR most of their lives were fed

ad lib starting at age 60 their mortality went through the roof.

So ................. since all of us here are interested in knowing

the latest news about the monkey studies, does anyone in this group,

or the CR community at large, have close enough links with the monkey

experimenters so that we could be kept up-to-date periodically with

the mortality data, rather than having to wait ten years until final

publication?

Rodney.
