Guest guest
Hi Carol, Has he been diagnosed with hemochromatosis? You can be either born with it or acquire it ( excessive absorption of iron). It can be acquired from a result of transfusions, medical conditions, or excessive long-term intake of iron. Blood tests can determine this condition. Steps should be taken to avoid iron in food and supplements and to avoif foods cooked in cast iron cookware or stored in metal pans. Iron is a powerful pro-oxidant. Often antioxidants are used to balance this condition. Increase the intake of Vitamin C, E, Selenium and Beta-Carotene, garlic and Co-enzyme Q-10. Reduce fat intake except for the good fats, and get moderate exercise. Guest guest
Traditional treatment for hemosiderosis is chelation or blood letting (phlebotomy). Guest guest
Hemochrmatosis is a hereditary disorder of iron metabolism found primarily in males ... it causes excessive absorption of iron from foods and supplements and the skin then turns bronze. Arthritis, cirrhosis of liver, diabetes and heart disorders can also ensue. I'd give the guy alpha lipoic acid or other free radical fighters like Vitamin E as too much iron in tissues and organs causes high numbers of free radicals. Nano DHLA from Premier Research Labs is supposed to be the most powerful anti oxidant, it's a precursor to alpha lipoic acid. is Rotella, M.Ac. Guest guest
Taking Vitamin C with a condition such as hemochromatosis is not recommended because it increases absorption of iron in the intestines. How was he diagnosed ? Was it tissue mineral analysis ? I dont own the equipment yet so cant advise from that end. My mom passed away due to the complications of late diagnosis of hemochromatosis. The main thing to do is get diagnosed properly by a physician. Most dont recognise it as a real condition. The only foolproof confirmation for it is to have a genetic screening done for the affected genes. Once it has been confirmed the easy " cure " for it is to donate blood on a regular basis. That tends to keep the levels at more reasonable level. Men are more severely impacted because they have had more years of build up in their tissues. It is often called " Bronze Diabetes " dues to the bronze palour of the skin & the damaged pancreas causing diabetes. All of my male relatives with the genetic defect have suffered from joint degeneration, liver , heart & pancreas damage. Women start out less severe due to the time frame of menstruation. If he indeed has the disorder urge him to get diagnosed as well as his whole family. I can attest to the devastating affects of it going undetected. Guest guest
Lea Ann, you are welcome to some of mine! Maybe we can be blood sisters, lol. It is sad that they toss our iron rich blood out. When they do the finger stick test to check for iron, the nurses and techs always gasp at how high mine is, lol. I’m going to have to talk to my doctor or the pharmacist about pulverizing some of my supplements into the recipes in the vitamix. There is nothing worse than choking on huge pills like fish oil. I’ve gotten to the point that I will gag even when I floss my molars. I mean so bad to the point that I have vomited. This could solve that problem. And, better yet with these recipes I may no even need some of the supplements or medications. AmicoCT zone6
Guest guest
My hemoglobin is always fine, it is my ferritin that is always low (and as you know, thyroid/adrenal issues can't be resolved until your ferritin levels are in the right zone)http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/And sadly 90% of all doctors and endocrinologists don't even know this. Guest guest
RIGHT! And in most cases, you have to fight to even get them to run the right tests to check for ferritin! I was sent to a "top" endocrinologist at Emory University years ago because of an adrenal crash and thyroid storm, and he was the most clueless, uninformed idiot I have ever encountered. My doc had informed him that I had an extreme allergic reaction to synthroid, but the idiots solution for my thyroid crisis was to INCREASE my synthroid-he didn't even test for anything beyond a basic TSH test. Two hour drive, 4 hours there, two hours home, and all I got for the effort was an extra script for the very medicine that put me in the hospital the week before. Ooops, soapbox is getting a good work out today! I’m going to have to talk to my doctor or the pharmacist about pulverizing some of my supplements into the recipes in the vitamix.
