Hi Bruce

Thanks for this wonderful explanation. I have another question, does coconut

oil only fight " lipid coated virus " as some people claim? Is it correct to

think that the MCFAs in coconut oil come in different kinds/variety to help

fight bacteria, etc?

Thanks

Rowena,

Several authors have given the mistaken impression that it is only

monolaurin that gives coconut oil its antiviral and antibacterial action.

This is not correct. Our bodies do make monolaurin from the lauric acid in

coconut oil. But that is not the main source of coconut oil's antimicrobail

action. Only about 8-10% of the lauric acid in coconut oil is converted into

monolaurin in our bodies. Coconut oil gets most of its antimicrobial effects

from the medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) themselves. All of the

medium-chain fatty acids, not just lauric acid, kill bacteria and viruses,

as well as fungi/yeast. It is the MCFAs that make coconut oil effective

against infections, monolaurin is helpful, but is not the main player.

Monolaurin is good, but I prefer pure coconut oil. The reason is that each

MCFA has different effects on different microorganisms. Some are very

effective against certain viruses, while others are more effective against

other viruses. All of the MCFAs work synergistically together enhancing the

effects of each.

It is interesting, that in the HIV study in the Philippines pure coconut oil

was more effective in treating HIV than pure monolaurin. People with HIV

have lowered their viral counts, many to non-detectable levels using coconut

oil or fresh coconut. I have heard the testimonies of many people with a

variety of conditions including fibromyalgia, influenza, hepatitis C,

Crohn's disease, and numerous others who have experienced dramatic

improvement with nothing more than pure coconut oil.

,

MCFA can kill other organisms besides lipid coated viruses, but they appear

to be most effective against lipid coated organisms. Coconut oil contains

about 11 different fatty acids, all of which fight harmful microorganisms to

one extent or another. The MCFA are the most potent.

Bruce,

Do you have any links handy on info related to coconut oil and

Hepatitis-C? I have a friend with hep C. She has been nervous about

trying it. I suspect because she has had problems with an over-active

thyroid & coconut oil stimulates the thyroid.

Sorry to be ignorant, Bruce, but where could one find details / results of

the study you mentioned:

in the HIV study in the Philippines pure coconut oil was more effective in

treating HIV than pure monolaurin.

Thanks

Hi Rowena - To look at the " archives " , just go to the group's group

site below and click on " messages " . That's the " archive " . You'll find all

the messages there. You can put a " keyword " into the " search " block and

click on " go " and it will search for you, but it only searches a page at a

time. After each search, click on " next " and it searches the next page of

messages. If it doesn't find your keyword, it will say " no search results

found " or something like that. Just click on " next " .

Hope that helps!

Selina,

Nobody really knows what causes fibromyalgia. There seems to be some link

with chronic fatigue and some believe a viral infection is involved. Coconut

oil possibly can help kill the virus as well as boost energy. Some people

with fibromyalgia have reported relief from pain after they begin using

coconut oil.
