Nutrition, IQ, and a link

You know, it's absolutely true that IQ can be affected by nutrition.

There are many different sources of evidence for this, but I'll just

post the link to a fascinating article from the NY Times a few days

ago. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/16/health/16iodine.html It also

happens to relate to the Aquatic Ape hypothesis that Alobar brought

up.

In summary, people from landlocked areas often have iodine

deficiencies because they don't regularly consume rich sources of

iodine like sea critters and sea vegetables. Iodine deficiency causes

a ton of problems, including greater likelihood of mental

retardation/defect AND lower IQ points. (Given that the sea is by far

the best source of iodine, the aquatic ape hypothesis is pretty much

verified, I think. There are lots of other proofs of it, as well.)

Anyway, while lots of areas including America solved much of the

iodine problem by iodizing salt, some folks, like many in Kazakhstan,

interior China, and India, never started using iodized salt or any

other iodine sources, in part because in these areas people had

spread all kinds of paranoid rumors and fears about iodine being

toxic. The article describes how progress has been made in Kazakhstan

on encouraging people to use iodized salt, and the beneficial

results, including the near-elimination of iodine-deficiency

diseases, AND higher average IQ. Neat!
