Guest guest
Greetings-- I am writing because I have jujst been diagnosed with Graves' disease. In looking back, I realize my symptoms started around the time I began using coconut oil and milk regularly. I ahven't been using them lately as my appetetite has really decreased but I have had racing heart, tremors, and major hair loss in the last month which is what sent me to the doctor for a blood test. Is there any chance that using coconut oil could have messed up my thyroid? My naturopath wants to treat my GD through diet, herbs, and supplements and has taken me off dairy, fish, red meat, and eggs for their high iodine content and wheat just on the possibility of allergy. I'm OK without most of those, but no dairy is killing me. I was wondering about using coconut milk which woudl at least be good in smoothies ands such. I always hear that coconut oil is great for those trying to lose weight as it speeds the metabolism. Since I'm hyperthyroid I'm guessing it would be a bad idea for me. ANy ideas? Thanks-- Melisa
Guest guest
I would suggest joining the Iodine list. Lots of discussion of Iodine and various Thyroid problems. iodine/ I would certainly suggggerst doing your own research before cutting back on Iodine. Below are a few quotes I pulled from the list archives. Alobar Thyroid disease — When there's not enough iodine to bind with cell membranes, it allows enzymes called peroxidases (which can damage those membranes) to wreak havoc and cause autoimmune disease, such as thyroiditis (Hashimoto's or Grave's). In fact, Dr. Abraham has several cases of both thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism (not just hypothyroidism) that have corrected after sufficient iodine/iodide supplementation. For over a century, high doses of iodine have helped both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Many doctors fear giving too much iodine will cause Hashimoto's to worsen. But this usually isn't the case. One 1860 French physician mistakenly gave a tincture of iodine when he meant to give digitalis to a woman with Grave's Disease. She recovered within three weeks. When he discovered his mistake, he switched to digitalis, and her symptoms came back. He switched back to the iodine and achieved a remission. Guest guest
Hi Melisa, I am not a medical person, but I do have hypothyroidism, underactive thyroid. I have undertaken quite a lot of medical research regarding thyroid disorders, and I tend to think that coconut oil in itself does not cause a thyroid problem, but it may act to highlight a thyroid problem in terms of Graves' Disease, overactive thyroid, so in that sense it may make existing symptoms slightly worse. I found this link that may be of help to you:- http://thyroid.about.com/cs/dietweightloss/a/coconutoil.htm Shomon's website is an excellent source of information. A thyroid disorder is a very complex subject, where unfortunately there are no easy answers, where many things can trigger it off, some examples:- 1. Hereditary condition, where it can be passed down genetically through families. My maternal grandmother had hypothroidism, and one of her sons had hyperthyroidism too. 2. Noteable fluctuations of other hormones within the body, such as at commencement of menstruation cycle, and/or during menstruation cycles, and also becoming and being pregnant, (sometimes this is not totally apparent until after say the second, or third pregnancy). This is partly due to changes in oestrogen levels within the body. 3. Again on the subject of oestrogen levels, this can also include the oral contraceptive pill, and also hormone replacement therapy at the time of the menopause. 4. Menopause 5. Stress - I have heard it said that if someone is a very sensitive person, they can in turn find that in times of extreme stress it can highlight, and/or exacerbate a thyroid problem, especially where that person tends to suppress their emotional feelings, keeping them bottled up and to themselves. Therefore, if possible it is best to try to avoid stressful situations were possible as a precautionary measure. This could be stress at work, marital problems, moving home, and/or a death in the family etc. As I have already mentioned hormones fluctuate within the body, including thyroid hormones, so in that respect it is possible for someone that is hyperthyroid to become hypothyroid, and vice versa. Also some patients can have some symptoms of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism at the same time. I was also hyperthyroid (overactive)at one time, before becoming hypothyroid (underactive).
