Guest guest
How can one become allergic to Iodine? It is needed for life! No Iodine in coconut meat that I know of. USDA food database does not indicate Iodine in any quantity. So none in oil or flour either. Guest guest
Iodine number is a measure of the degree of saturation of an oil. It has nothing to do with iodine content. Coconut oil contains no iodine. Guest guest
I wish I knew how someone gets allergic to a mineral necessary for life. I've been allergic to iodine for 20 years though, in all forms, topical or ingested. Iodine, betadine, povidone, crospovidone, and any and all iodine containing ingredients such as carrageenan, algin, etc. I also must be careful to limit consumption of high iodine foods like eggs, milk, beef, broccoli, asparagus and other high iodine veg. This is in addition to the obvious like seafood, shellfish, and so on. No doctor has ever been able to tell me the consequences of avoiding iodine, either. Though one allergist did tell me I'm NOT successfully avoiding iodine because in 20 years, I have not developed a goiter. I do have to take antihistamines on a nearly daily basis. Unfortunately the USDA database does not list iodine content for any foods. So not seeing iodine listed for coconut there doesn't mean anything. thanks anyway, sol -- In Coconut Oil , Alobar <Alobar@...> wrote: > > How can one become allergic to Iodine? Guest guest
But...........does iodine value have anything to do with how much iodine is IN the oil? And if you know what " the number of grams of iodine that will be 'consumed' by 100g of fat or oil " means, you are way ahead of me. I don't know what it means at all. I did see " iodine value " defined another way a couple of places, but I couldn't understand what those meant either. thanks anyway, sol > > From http://www.tis-gdv.de/tis_e/ware/oele/kokosoel/kokosoel.htm: > > " With an iodine value of 7 - 10, coconut oil is a nondrying oil . . . Guest guest
Yeah, I've heard that before......but I've been reacting to iodine in any and all forms for 20 years, so I think that statement is total garbage. Even if true, it doesn't stop me having allergic reactions to everything iodine containing so it doesn't help me. sol > > Sol, thought you might find this interesting: > > http://www.magistralbiotech.com/flash-the-iodine-allergy-myth-9.htm >

Guest guest
hey cat, read this link http://vegburner.co.uk/oils.htm you will know why it is called iodine number/value. It is a measure of iodine dissolution in an oil, in general more the unsaturated fat the more it dissolves iodine. my guess is that probably high iodine number of oil leads to inability to retain iodine in the body and the reason why polyunsaturated cause hypothyroidism, Also this link shows that more the iodine value, the more an oil forms plastic like substance on oxidation. cat_thump <solbun@...> wrote: Yeah, I've heard that before......but I've been reacting to iodine in any and all forms for 20 years, so I think that statement is total garbage.
