There was an article in the Parade Magazine, a suplement to my Sunday

paper, entitled " Superfoods To Know " .

Listed along with nuts, cinnamon, olive oil, raw honey and grass-fed

beef was coconut milk.

" The coconut is an unusual fruit: It's rich, and the fat is mostly

saturated. In the South Pacific, traditional diets use copious amounts

of coconut oil, yet studies there have shown that people don't get

heart disease. In the U.S., research to support the heart-healthy

claim is still being conducted. But we do know that coconut flakes,

coconut milk and cream, and coconut oil contain lots of an antiviral,

antibacterial fatty acid called lauric acid - one of the immune-

boosters babies get from breast milk. "

I find this encouraging when I read articles such as this. Maybe the

time will soon come when coconut oil doesn't make the mainstream

nutritionist react negatively at its consumption.

Dear Patty,

Greetings from the Philippines ----------- the world's second largest grower

of coconut palm trees (3.2 M ha, 350 M trees, 12.5 billion nuts, annually) and

the origin of the product virgin coconut oil (VCO) !

You mentioned as learned from your local magazine that the coconut milk

(extracted from fresh coconut meat/kernel) is one of the " superfoods " available

for all humans, and recently for our pet animals (mentioned by many in this

e-forum on coconut oil). The use/consumption of virgin coconut oil (VCO) which

has created great interest for people (worldwide now) concerned with health and

wellness is also etsxtracted from the coconut milk which can be taken daily as

our body supply of lauric acid ( a saturated medium chain fatty acid) for

multiply health and nutritional benefits. But taking coconut milk directly is

obviously not practical and cheap if you are not living in coconut-producing

countries, hence the need to use the coconut oil (VCO) instead imported from

countries in the Asia and the Pacific, among the tropical regions in this

earth.

The concern for Coconut milk or coconut oil may not draw the same global

attention to support mitigation of global change or warming in recent years, but

I'm optimistic that very soon, with rapid scientific facts being generated and

testimonies of people on the benefits they experienced from the use of coconut

oil or coconut milk as food and health care, most medical/nutrition doctors

will voice out their strong support for the consumption of the superfood

coconut milk/coconut oil.

Cheers,

I can attest to the wonders of Coconut Oil, it is after all the Only Oil I use

for all my needs including body moisturization, Hair, deodorant, etc. I use it

everyday on my body and the results are extraordinary, I also take at the very

least 6 tablespoons every day, plus the Milk when I can.

My only worry is the profit motive of Big Pharma and Big Agra. They have

(successfully) ran a a campaign against CO to replace it with their GMO Soy Oil

and Hydrogenated vegetable Oil by labeling it unhealthy. Now i it is the new

wonder food and Oil.. they will take notice

I sincerely worry about them " taking over " the manufacture of CO with " New " ,

" enhanced " methods which may make traditional un-messed-with Natural CO a thing

of the past...

Frantz,

I'm delighted to hear on the ways you've been utilizing the natural products

from the coconut palm tree ----------its versatile natural oil and the equally

desirable coconut milk.

Your worries concerning the possible manipulations of giant profit-hungry

companies to take advantage soon of controlling coconut oil by processing it the

way that suits their business objectives instantly opened my mind on the matter.

Well, who will not respond quickly if something is dubbed as " superfood " . Just

hoping that processed products for food and wellness/health care from

fruits/nuts harvested from the coconut palm will remain as natural and healthy

for us. And this is something to wait for in the coming years !

Cheers,

Hi

I use it just like I would use a stick deodorant, taking a small amount of

solidified CO, very simple , just put some in the fridge, and apply it to the

areas, such as arm pits, etc.. It takes a week or 2 to work but ultimately no

more foul smells.. I do sometimes supplement it f with Aubrey Organics " Men's

Stock Herbal Pine Deodorant " ... You can use the CO it in other places where you

do not want foul odors..the groin area being one of them... it seems to work

even better there...

It moisturizes the skin in ways none of the chemical contraptions can, leaving

your skin radiant, elastic and protected. It is quickly absorbed by the skin.

I know I sound like a commercial for CO but it DOES work wonders when taken

internally and externally...

Hi

this really made me think. When I was growing up the only sort of

coconut products we had were dessicated coconut and coconuts themselves.

When I saw the screwdriver and hammer on the kitchen work surface, I

knew Mum had bought a coconut!

I have always been a huge fan of coconut and when I heard about its

health benefits I began to read up about it, but often had difficulty

buying products. Coconut oil has only been available in my local health

food shop for the last year and I can only get coconut flour via the

Internet at the moment. Coconut milk in cans is readily available now

but the quality and price vary greatly. Coconut water is also hard to

find, only one shop where I live sells it, otherwise it's buy in bulk on

the Internet and I've never ever seen a fresh coconut, I didn't even

know what one was until a few years ago!

Also I've been wondering lately whether we are getting a different

variety of coconut here in England lately, as the ones for sale now are

quite small and almost round, whereas previously they were much much

larger and more 'pointed' at the ends.

Hi !

With the connections of mother England with its former colonies in Africa and

Asia (particularlymember countries of the Common Wealth Nations), I suspect the

coconuts (nuts) you usually find in markets/outlets in England come from these

countries, likely not from the Philippines.

As what we should know, the nut (commercial) consists of: the meat/kernel

inside the hard, ovoid shell, dark brown (endocarp); the coconut water inside

the shell together with solid endosperm or white meat. This means that when the

coconut fruit (a fibrous drupe or nut) is exported, usually the outer skin

(exocarp) and fibrous husk layer (mesocarp) are already removed and left at the

coconut producing countries and used for various social, economic and ecological

purposes. The shape and size of nuts depends (or a resultant) of the

combination of genetics, crop nutrition, water supply (rainfall) and other

cultural practices followed by coconut farmers in producing coconuts. The fruit

is about 20 -30 cm long and weighs 1.2 to 2.0 kg, while the nut about 10 - 15 cm

in length and 0.5 and 1.5 kg weight.

In stores, good quality nuts, regardless of shape and size, and variety (tall

and dwarf varieties) and hydrid types/cross, should have no cracks and or holes,

free from unwanted smell). As a rule-of thumb, a fresh mature nut when shaken

must have the distinct dull sound of the coconut water (you hear when the nut

is place close to your ears !). Also asked how long it has received or stocked

the nuts. Harvested nuts if to be consumed fresh should have a shelf life of

not more than 2 months, preferably.

Well, hoping this helps you understand nuts of the coconut palm you find in

local stores.

Cheers,
