I have been mixing powdered zinc oxide into vco and using it as a sunscreen

for years now with perfect results. Just mix to whatever

proportion/consistency you like. Never been sunburned--or even

tanned--wherever it is on my skin.

I was recently at a trade show and there was an Australian company marketing

their sunscreen product which was 23% micronized zinc oxide in an oil

base--unfortunately they used all vegetable oils for some reason--that is

probably a good ratio to work with.

Thanks so much for the good idea. I'm going to try it ASAP. Can you get zinc

oxide powder at the local drug store?

Shouldn't we be careful of " micronized " anything ?

I use mineral makeup but I was warned to stay away

from micronized mineral makeup because the particles

become small enough to pass through the epidermal

barrier. What are your thoughts on this ?

Hi Barbie,

Sorry for the late reply, but I've been out of town.

In my post below, I didn't mean to imply the OP should use micronized zinc

oxide, but only to give an example of the ratio an Australian company was

using in a marketed--and presumably tested--product as a possible guideline

to use when mixing up her own sunscreen at home. Nothing more than that bit

of information: that 23% or so powdered zinc oxide to vco may be a

reasonable mix with which to experiment.

I mentioned that I found the Australian product undesirable because of the

base oils used. The micronized zinc makes the sunscreen less noticable--it

just looks like one of those " sparkle gels " or " glitter dusts " on the

skin--but I've never used it myself nor do I desire to seek out a source of

micronized zinc to make my own sunscreen.

I don't mind a little opacity in my homemade sunscreen at times, since I'm

using it functionally when I expect to get a good dose of direct sun. If I

don't want it to be visible on my skin, i use more effort to rub it in or

dilute with more oil--still don't get burnt. I just use a dab on a fingertip

and keep dabbing here and there on the face until I think i got it right. A

little heavier on the tops of shoulders, decollete, and backs of hands, and

that's about it.

Hmm, what type of mineral make-up do you use? I'm using Jane Iredale which

says it's " micro-pulverized " but that it does not block pores or absorb into

skin but instead forms a filter layer on the skin's surface.

Basic marketing-speak. Elsewhere on the site they do refer to it as

micronized.

I haven't researched the subject, so if you have anything interesting to

share, please feel free to forward to me.

********As in Bare Minerals? Is that okay to use?

I have fair skin and use coconut oil and don't sit out in the sun much anyway.

Is the spf of coconut oil 15?

Hi Jeanne ! I use bare minerals as my make-up.

From what I understand Bare Minerals is

not micronized and they advertise that it

naturally has a 15 SPF. I try to use as

little chemicals in and on my body as I

possibly can. It is SO hard ! I am very fair

skinned too. I stayed out of the sun faithfully

for years but the wrinkles came anyway. I am

53 yers old.(I think one's propensity towards

wrinkles has a big genetic component.) Anyway,

that said I had read a lot about vitamin D and

sunshine exposure and it's relation to bone density

and depression. I decided to use the slow exposure/

no burn protocol with only coconut oil as a " barrier " .

I live in Northern Virginia so,for the past two years

I have been sunning my skin on as much of my body surface

as often as I can when it gets warm enough. It makes me

feel SO much better and I don't burn as I have in the past.

I get a beautful golden glow. I must confess that when my

husband and I went to Florda a month ago to visit

my son and daughter-in-law I broke down and bought

Babana Boat because I had not been in the sun yet

to built up my melanin layer and I was afraid I would

burn when we spent one whole day at the beach. Burning

is still a HUGE no-no for me.I think next time there is

a chance I will have to spend an extended time in the sun

I am going to try and mix the bare minerals with the coconut

oil and see how it works. If it works it will be great

because there are no chemicals in this mixture ! If I end

up doing such thing I will be sure to report back the results !
