Have you read the original Atkins and Hellers books mentioned or have you

just heard about the diet. I suspect from your post the latter

Atkins works they've come.

The Hellers in particular agree with this and explain that a lot of people

can't tolerate sweeteners.

No. Atkins doesn't count calories at all. He promoted real fresh food.

Of course the problem lies in when we eat more calories than our body

That's not the whole story. You have to look at the whole insulin cycle as

well which is the main reason for a low carb diet in the first place.

I cant *imagine* trying to get by on empty lab made food or not enough

Absolutely horrific, I can't think of anything worse. I like food not lab

products.

However everyone is different and many people can't tolerate large numbers

of carbs. Anyone with insulin resistance or hyperinsulanaemia will *not*

function at peak level while ingesting a high carb diet.

Exactly what Atkins preached. Real calories, real food.

Not sure if I'm who you're referring to but if I'm touting Atkins why on

earth would I believe in horrid processed stuff - I don't. but you really

don't seem to grasp what Atkins is all about.

No, neither myself nor any of the other low carbers said that so why on

earth do you say that perhaps that's what we're saying. Why don't you read

what we actually did say. You obviously understand the whole concept

carbohydrates about as much as you understand Atkins. I've already clearly

stated my position. I don't need it interpreted (erroneously) by you.

If Atkins is used as a lifestyle, and not a diet, it is healthy. When

I go shopping for my meals, I rarely go down the canned food aisle. I

My food mostly comes from the meat, dairy and produce aisles. I don't

have time to figure out which diet product I need. I just want to

adjust my diet so that I am at a healthy weight and ideal health. I

klearned to do this by reading the book and researching what I have

learned. Of these things I have discovered that my diet, Atkins, is

one that is actually recommended by the " experts " . No one will

recommend to the fact that Atkins is a healthy diet but they all will

say that, bell peppers, strawberries, blueberries, collard

greens,mustard greens,spinach,asparagus,onions,

tomatoes,avocados,walnuts, brazil nuts, pecans are healthy foods.

Fish, meat, chicken, eggs are healthy foods. These are some foods on

Atkins. Sure, you can get the frankenfoods if you want. Many other

diet companies are attempting to take advantage of low carbers by

making their own versions of these diet products. But it is not

necessary to make a diet out of Atkins and too many people believe

that that is what it is.Atkins recommends food and has a list of

acceptable foods in the book. People who dislike vegetables or have a

hard time managing their appettite can use many of the frankenfoods

but this isn't what the diet is all about.But just by skimming thru

my old Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution pp.85,124-32, 228-31 I see no

reference to the products as a necessity in dietary success.. As for

the convenience foods ( frankenfoods ) it does say that they come in

handy in a pinch,although unprocessed foods are recommended. This is

on p.129 and it warns not to overdo or abuse these foods.

Improving my diet has given me stable blood glucose levels, stable

blood pressure. My cholesterol total is 149 with desired ratios. My

triglycerides are 49. I have not had ferocious itchy skin in 4 years.

My acid reflux is gone. My joints are not achy and migraines have

vanished.Believe it or not, my hair is healthier with fewer gray.

Before making assumption of the diet, read it. Read the book, visit

blogs and other pro-lowcarb/Atkins web sites.This is what I did and I

learned more about good nutrition. My niece, a dietition and

naysayer, was surprised to see the foods that I actually eat on

Atkins.

Splenda is the preferred sweetener over sugar.Alot of negativity has

been written about it but I have yet to find it harming my body the

way sugar or fructose.Unfortunately, my past dietary habits involved

tons of sugar. Sometimes I need to satisfy the sweet tooth that I

developed over the years. I prefer the artificial sweetener over

diabetes or cavities.

I would like to finish with the fact that the Atkins diet is

mallible. It is a schematic to help everyone to individulize their

needs.This is why I not only researched this diet, I investigated

other lifestyle that are similar.

My body is functioning at peak level. This past November, I completed

a 5K run. This is something I attempted 15 years ago when I weighed

30 lbs less and I didn't come close to achieve this. To get a better

understanding of how low carb/protein diets work with the body, not

against it, I suggest adding the book Protein Power by Drs.

and Eades along with the 2002 edition of the Atkins deit

Revolution.

read the research about this fleecing of American pocketbooks but I

dont believe I saved an article explaining that.

would ask is why would this laboratory manufactured food be any

helathier than Mcs? At least Mcs has calories in it. Our

bodies *need* calories. Healthy calories are converted into energy in

our diet. Of course the problem lies in when we eat more calories

than our body requires and our body stores the fat to use as energy

in case of crisis. I cant *imagine* trying to get by on empty lab

made food or not enough calories. How unpleasant would that be when

our body is crying for nourishment? I am not saying that we need to

always feel " full " like how one feels after walking away from

overeating at Thanksgiving,

Perhaps she is just saying that she has changed her eating habits to

a more basic lifestyle,

LOL - Yes of course. Some people will always try to twist things. I had a

friend who went on a 1200 a day calorie controlled diet and worked out her

allowance in chocolate mars bars and vodka!! Honestly. what that would do

to your health is unthinkable.

I personally don't agree with the *lean* protein bit. I believe the whole

saturated fat myth that we already know was used to suppress the use of

coconut oil and promote the vegeatable oils is responsible for people

believing that fatty meats are bad. A really good book on the subject is

'Eat Fat - Get Thin' by Barry Groves. And the book is about overall health -

not just losing weight.

Also (I hate to sound as if I'm getting picky - who me :-) ) but I don't see

the point in *low cal* either. Our bodies know how many calories we need.

restricting intake below that just leads to the whole starvation - lower the

metabolic rate - conserve energy cycle, so, for me, a healthy diet does not

restrict either calories or fat.

Now I'm not for one minute advocating a free for all stuff your face

approach. Too much, i.e. more than we need of anything is bad for us.

Yes I can understand that. We have a local farmers market every fortnight

and several organic free range farms sell their meat there. I try to buy

what I can but, understandably, it is so expensive.
