Hmmm... I didn't realize achondroplasia was a disease. Is it

catching?

Excuse my language but are you " stupid " . First off I take it your not a

little person/dwarf. Second if you did your research on your own already

you would know that Achondroplasia is not a disease, it's a genetic

disorder. How would you like it if we referred to tall people as walking

" diseases " . I think you need to go have your brain checked for a disease.

And do your homework before you come at us again with a stupid remark.

I agree with Vita Here! I feel that 's Comment was Totally out

of place and inappropriate! This student is DOING THEIR HOMEWORK.

they are asking for help...not critism. they may say something

like " People who have this condition seems to be easily agitated when

asked simple innocent questions...Be aware when asking them

questions, they may get very upset. "

The kids are taught in school that Dwarfism is a disease, I've had to

unteach this to several highschoolers in my town.

It's the teachers and school curricula that are incorrect in

classifying

dwarfism as a " disease " . These kids who write to the listserv asking

for

information are just repeating what they were told about dwarfism.

Instead

of giving the kids grief about it, messages such as the one below are

a

better way to go, in my opinion.

I think that when you are at that age, any kind of physical or mental affliction

is considered a disease to you. I am pretty positive these kids don't think it's

a disease like to

FLU where it's contagious (haha) but they just don't have a wide vocabulary on

scientific terms. In high school they just teach you the basics. I would blame

it on the teachers

not the kids. Trust me, my biology teacher taught us a bunch of crap that wasn't

accurate, including the origin of AIDS but that's a whole other story.

I sure wish everyone would hold their horses about this~ My God, I even

referred to it as a " disease " in Amy's baby book. And, I'll tell you why.

I thought, mistakenly, that it " sounded better " and less offensive~ at least

to me. I thought to have a disorder, or " something wrong with her " was

awful! She was a sweet little baby, and I didn't want anything to be wrong

with her. I took offense at the idea that her older sister was " average " !

Sara was as bright as could be~ I sure didn't see anything average about

her! :D

Of course, now with a little education, I know it's a disorder that she has.

I also think to refer to it as a disease makes it a little easier for the

general public to understand. I certainly wouldn't jump down someone's

throat for calling it that~ which BTW~ perpetuates the myth that you have a

chip on your shoulder!

My 2 cents for the new year~

Moi? I have stayed out of this completely, so I'm surprised to see my

name invoked here. I've been watching. Although several people have

posted critical comments, I've only seen one person attack this

student, and several people have apologized, quite eloquently, too.

I must say I was taken aback to see that anyone would be upset when a

student who comes here trying to *learn* about dwarfism ends up being

criticized for not knowing in advance that dwarfism shouldn't be

referred to as a disease.

As I've noted on occasion in the past, before our daughter was

diagnosed with achondroplasia and we got involved in LPA, my wife and

I would have had *no idea* that the word " dwarf " was okay and

" midget " was not. I would have thought they were equally acceptable

or equally offensive. I really do believe that, with a few

exceptions, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

First off, I did appologize to her for calling her " stupid " . I don't have a

problem w/anyone wanting to learn about LP's. As a matter of fact I hold a

class once a month in " My School " teaching average sized people about us,

" Little People " . And no I would not walk up to someone who had a child w/

mental retardation and ask them what caused the disease. There are other

ways to ask things so you are not being rude, or disrespectful. I don't

care what you people think of me, cause like I said It's my opinion, and you

don't have to like it.

GET OVER IT!

AND TO THE CHILD AS THEY KEEP CALLING YOU, I'M VERY SORRY IF I OFFENDED YOU.

THAT WAS VERY RUDE OF ME. I APPOLOGIZE.
