I took it upon myself to mentor a dwarf kid 3 years ago. He now lives in

South Carolina after moving from New Orleans so I had been making 2 trips

there for the last 3 years. I think the LPA should get involved and I would

be happy helping another kid but not so far away...LOL

The way I found out about this kid was I recieved a call from another LP that

he and his mom needed help. This may be an idea that any LP's know of someone

and they can't mentor call another LP.

Mentoring program - my hand is raised over here in the

corner in case anyone is looking. I've wondered why

LPA does not have such a program.

Very interested in hearing status...

The one on one by individuals is the only way this will ever work in LPA. If

you wait for the leadership of LPA it will never get done right!!!!!!!

Keep on doing what you're doing, Thanks

Gee, I don't recall ANY LPA Past president prior to Marge Carlisle ever

discussing Mentoring.

Including you . What were the obstacles that prevented you from getting

it " done right " ?

It never came up. I was the one who tried for 10 years to get the

achondroplasia printed into Spanish, but those that came after me decided it

wasn't needed!!!!!

It's a hoot that you're counting yourself in as an exec officer, as I recall

you always seemed to have problems staying around to complete one full

term!!!!!!!!

List:

If you're wondering why people aren't chomping at the bit to serve in

a national office or host a convention, just read carefully this

current thread. The best way to get hated in LPA (by some) seems to

be to stick your neck out and volunteer.

The SLC conference hasn't even STARTED and already everyone is

bitching at the conference committee. PLEASE SPARE THEM!!! The room

block issue is probably nothing more than someone forgetting to leave

a note for someone else at the hotel. These things happen and - yes-

they are a pain in the ass. I guarantee you're going to have ten

times the trouble with the airlines than you will the hotel! Your

convention committee appears to me (based on their posts) committed

to resolving this minor issue.

And JUST WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH AN OVERFLOW HOTEL!! To host a

conference with 1000+ delegates in a single hotel - many with

mobility handicaps when several smaller ones might be more convenient

is something I've wondered for a long time. (A single hotel would

probably work well if the building was 300 ft by 300 ft and 500

stories tall with 100 ton freight elevators that can accommodate 40

Amigo scooters in one trip. Most hotels are not structured like

that.)

Besides, it's often difficult to tell how many people will show! You

can plan for 1000 and get 500 or 5000 - so what is a planner to do?

Judge the conference after it's over - please!

One other note: Will the past executive officers please take your

personal vendettas offline?! I experienced these when you were in

office and that's why I did not vote for you to continue.

Thanks,

Randy (Whoopass) Bradford

P.S. Be careful what you ask for. I may be just pissed off enough

to run for office and be the " bad cop " so that Roloff can get by

being the " good cop " .

Danny (and List),

I don't know the answers to several of your questions, but I do have some

recent information on " A " Peer/mentor Program.. Emphasize " A " because

I don't know if this is " THE " , or one of several, initiatives in this area.

Martha Undercoffer has done a tremendous amount of work, on a peer program

for LPA. She has completed a Grant Request (which I recently read in detail)

and has submitted it to many possible funding sources. Due to recent

events in our country it is more difficult that ever to secure funding for

non-profit organizations such as ours. As you might imagine, to roll out a

mentoring program can largely rely on volunteers, but some funds -- are

required to initiate the program. Establishing a guide book, training

volunteers, hiring a professional counselor for escalation issues --are just

a few of the items that require funding to " properly " execute such a

program.

Most recently I have heard, that a few possible funding sources are taking a

second look at the proposal.

Let me suggest to this list: If you are serious about helping to roll out a

Mentoring program within LPA, then send a private email to

mroloff@... with the Subject line: I want to help the Mentoring

program.. Please indicate if you want to help find donations, or help

volunteer as a Mentor. I will pass your name on to Martha so we can keep you

in the loop as this exciting program finds it's way through the maze of

issues, with any such organization.

Martha has established a very comprehensive program plan and conservative

budget for a local level peer support program that would be tremendous value

to LP's and their families.

We just need the budgeted funds to kick it off.

Let's call a truce. And whatever you do to retaliate, don't put on a

sombrero and start serving chips.
