Guest guest
Gretchen, in part due to your recommendation, I dragged myself to the GigaPlex to see LOTR. I agree with you, it was excellent. But even before the film, the trailers were great too. You are so right about Austin Powers. It was hilarious and didn't seem like a " dig " at LPs at all. In fact, spotted a couple of cuties in the dance routine, which put me in a good frame of mind! :-) Second, the Star Wars: Attack of the Clones trailer made the picture seem a lot more interesting than the first. At least, interesting that " Anakin " seems about 8 years older but Portman looks to be practically the same age as before. ;-) Seriously though, the backgrounds looked fascinating, they hinted at the eventual Anakin -> Vader transformation, and there was no Jar Jar in sight. What's there to complain about? And finally, the Spider-Man trailer was energetic, funny and definitely made me want to see that right away. It totally amazes me what they can do with special effects these days. (There was also a " Blade II " trailer, but the less said about that, the better. Wesley Snipes needs to hang up that tired " C ya, wouldn't wanna B ya " persona, or at least send it out for a good dry-cleaning.) Oop, we were talking about LOTR. Regarding the special effects: Un freaking mazing. I mean, A friggin believable! Unlike " DwarfStar, " I was totally impressed by the hobbit effects. It helps that Elijah Wood really does have kind of odd facial features, but besides all that, I thought that they were absolutely able to pull off the trickery of the varied sizes. Of course, I " knew " that they were using digital magic, but for the most part, it was completely seamless. I had no more trouble suspending my disbelief in that respect than I did in believing for 3 hours that there were such things as wizards, orcs and elves. Speaking of 3 hours, here's some advice to anyone who hasn't seen the flick yet. DO NOT BUY A SODA TO DRINK DURING THIS FILM. You have been warned. Also, the film was fairly emotional at times. I hope it's not a spoiler to say that I spent approximately the last 45 minutes of the movie with moist eyes. And that's despite knowing exactly what was to happen -- I only read the series about 10 times as a kid. Which reminds me, I don't know exactly how understandable the story is without reading it first. I think someone would understand the gist of what was happening, but would have the idea that there was a lot more to the story that was going on offstage. Which is probably exactly how Tolkien would've liked it. J _________________________________________________________
