Guest guest
AMEN Dan! Let me add that AOL groups are NOT free, they are available only to members and those members pay $20 + per month for subscription to AOL. Capitalism rocks. --- Dan Kennedy <dkennedy@...> wrote: > >Hey yall! Guest guest
In regard to what Bonnie was saying about ... I think that if you were to have read back and really digest what she had said, you would see that in fact she was not saying that should get rid of these ads altogether. What she did say was that for the people who chose not recive group posts in their personal email boxes but rather just go directly to the or club etc. to read posts. It can be very annoying when a giant advertisement pops up and you then need to click again and again to return to the posted message. Sure nothing in life is free, but not everyone is privlideged enough or fortunate enough to be wealthy and be able afford the best of the best. I am sure that none of us expected that anyway. maybe you recive these Group posts in you personal email box yourself? Maybe some of us really don't have the time or room in an email box to sift through thousands of emails each day. I personally hate to have a lot of clutter in my email box and its a real pain in the butt for me to have billboard pop-ups in my face all the time. There is nothing at all wrong with ads/pop up's but haveing 1/4 of the damn screen pop up with ad's constantly, is not going to make anyone buy anything any faster than a normal size ad would. I think that the main objective that Bonnie was making here was that it can be kept to a limit size wize and still work, I certanly do agree. Sometimes it's nice to try to understand what a person is saying or where they are coming from before you jump all over them and accuse them of just being out to get a freebe. Guest guest
If you set your mail program so that you receive plain text but not HTML, the ads load much quicker, and without graphics. Just a few lines of text at the bottom. Absolutely 100 percent unobtrusive. I don't see much difference between saying that should make *less* money versus *no* money. This list was completely free with no ads for several years -- it was hosted by the University of California at San Diego. There were many, many technical problems. works much better. But they are a business. Guest guest
Dear Dan I am rather dumb-founded that you are not only a writer with quite a bit under his belt, but also a moderator of this list. PLEASE take 15 minutes to read carefully back over what I have written. And let me also try to simplify it for you, to make it easier to understand: A- What I said was that we among other people choose to NOT receive any posts from groups or other lists servers in our personal email box. It has nothing to do with the the fact I don't know how to navigate any of this. It's that I DON'T want tons of emails in my box, so instead I go staight to the group and read over what I decide I want to. B- As far as me saying anything in regard to making less money or no money, once again if you took the time to pay attention, and read what I wrote, you would then see that in fact some of us are not fortunate enough to be able to afford paid sites AND having a large amount of ads as opposed to a smaller amount is not going to make any more money! What I also said was that they didn't need to take a 1/4 of the page with an ad, because no one is going to buy things anymore with a large ad with a small one. Once again I cannot really understand after reading back over my post, how you could have misinterpreted what I said. When in fact you are a writer and make a living at it? That would be like me as a drummer playing all my life and then someone asking me to play a particular tune and not understanding what they were talking about. Please clarify what I am missing here. Thanks. Guest guest
> AND having a large amount of ads as opposed to a smaller amount is > not going to make any more money! What I also said was that > they didn't need to take a 1/4 of the page with an ad, because no > one is going to buy things anymore with a large ad with a small > one. A few months back, announced they were moving to a partial subscription based revenue model. Those whose wished to pay for a subscription to 's Premium services would be eligible to receive different ad free content. For those who did not choose to subscribe, much of the same content would still be available, only it would be ad sponsored as we are seeing now. This is a move that many content providers are moving toward. The era of the " free content " internet is a thing of the past. Your statement about not making any more money with larger amounts of ads is incorrect. You are basing it on simply whether or not anyone buys something from the ad, or clicks on the ad to follow it. In the early period of web ads this would have been correct. Agencies paid by the " click " for their ads that were placed. That model changed and now there are two forces at work. Agencies now deal with both " page serves " and " page views " . The " page view " follows the classic idea of if the ad is clicked on and viewed, then the ad hosting website is paid for that view. This is not good for the website because most people don't click on the ads and thus no revenue is generated. Thus the " page serve " comes into play. The ad agency now pays the hosting website for each time the ad is " served " or in affect placed on a webpage. Then, if the ad is actually viewed, futher income is provided to the hosting site. This way, the hosting website gets income regardless of whether anyone buys something from the ad or even views it. The more " serves " , the more revenue. This is pretty much the same model that is used on television. Sponsors pay to have their ads " served " with no garantee the product will be purchased. If anything, instead of seeing less ads, there will be more. Maurice
