Using The Word Midget

Ok folks, I've read what everyone has said about the word MIDGET, but

have you ever heard an AVERAGE SIZE 5th grader call another 5th grader

Midget yet? It happened at the school that I am working in.

Around 4:00, when it's time to send all kids home, I heard this one young

lady call another student that she was MAD at a MIDGET as I was walking

down the hall. I quickly said to her " EXCUSE ME, WHAT DID YOU SAY? She

told me, and then realized that I was near by and said Mr. Carlisle I

wasn't talking about you as TEARS came to her eyes. Needless to say, she

was scared that she had said or done something wrong to upset me. I

explained to her that the word Midget wasn't nice and why.

I told to her to look up the word midget and write down the meaning of

the word out of the dictionary and then show me. I also told her to look

up the word DWARF, and see if she could explain the meaning of BOTH to

me. She couldn't and ask me if I could which I did. She apologized to me

as well the student that she had call that to. Then I went to the

principal office and told her what had happened. She wanted the name of

the girl and I told her NO that the problem was handle, but this wasn't

the first time I had heard that.

I asked her if I could talk to all of the students ( 1st thru 5th grade )

as well as the staff if this subject came up again. With a smile she said

YES. What I'm saying folks is, it's time that WE as LP'S once again

EDUCATE average size people as well as there CHILDREN. That's my TWO

CENTS on the subject.
