Re: Replying to the Polls?

Since we seem to have a new poll in the works, I'm assuming the last one is

finished. What were the results of it & what will be the outcome of it? Was

there any specific reason it was done aside from finding out how all of us

get our email?

What are the possible results of this new poll after the results are tallied?

And what about those of us who cannot access anything beyond email? Do we get

a say or is it just tough toenails because we are too cheap (or poor) to buy

a better system?

Thank you, Helen, for asking the question. I just realized some

people may be having trouble accessing the poll.

Since eGroups was acquired by , some people may need to

" convert " their account via the following web page:

convwiz

Follow the instructions there. Good luck, and E-mail me if you have any

questions or problems.

The reasons for the previous polls were stated in my Dec. 6 post, linked

here: dwarfism/message/10709

Any subscriber to the dwarfism group can participate in and

view the results of any of these polls by going to the following web page:

dwarfism/polls

Note that you must have a ID in order to access this page. A

ID is completely free and requires no obligation. It takes less than a

minute to register and then you have access to the polls. See the

following post for detailed instructions:

dwarfism/message/12003

Because of the way the polling system is designed, to be able to

participate in a poll does require that you have web access. If you do not

currently have web access, I would suggest looking into the various free

web services like NetZero or Juno. These should work fine with almost any

computer system.

Let's see...I have an AOL address so therefore I have found something that

works with my computer. But I don't have enough memory to be able to access

anything more than email or the lovely chatrooms that AOL provides. Next

suggestion?

Actually, Netzero is the lesser of two evils. Juno is making it pretty

tough to get free web anymore. I am not a frequent webuser but they limited

free users to 1:30 am est if you wanted to sign on. Then web access cuts

off around 3 ish.

I am not an AOL user and never have been, so forgive me if this is

incorrect -- but it is my understanding that the AOL software is, itself,

is a web browser, and you should already be able to access any web page on

the Internet via AOL. Are there any other AOL users out there who can

confirm or deny this? Thanks.

Yes you are right. AOL already has a web browser...located at

the top of the screen.

If you will remember ...it's a question of an older computer system not

being able to access the polls.

There are a few people on this list that are in this boat. I was up until

two years ago...when I could afford a new computer.

Another issue....more and more people are opting to buy e-mail only

computers. Does this mean that people will be discriminated against because

they can't afford a large computer system?.

Should people who can't access the web be allowed to participate in the

polls?

I say yes, emphatically!!!

It wouldn't take up that much time for them to e-mail the poll questions

back to you privately. It's not like a 1,000 members are taking part...more

like about 125. Out of those...what, maybe five people need to respond

privately?

This shouldn't be a big deal. :-)

I understand your point, Karin, and to some extent agree with the issues

you mention. However, aside from those, there is another issue to which I

do not want to expose myself, and that is the question of " voter fraud. "

Though a person could offer a full and unconditional guarantee that their

position as " pollmaster " would never be used to alter or otherwise

influence the result of a poll, they would be crazy to put themselves at

that kind of risk. Even without grounds to do so, people who disagree with

the pollmaster's viewpoints might not hesitate to accuse him of " voter

fraud " if the poll did not go their way. We should not risk opening that

can of worms. By it's design, the polling feature safeguards

against voter fraud, and I think it would be wise to keep those safeguards

in place. (And incidentally, these safeguards are another reason why the

polling feature is web-based instead of just e-mail based; it is much

easier to build the safeguards into a web-based system).
