I'm about 52 inches tall or around 4 feet. I haven't had a concrete diagnosis as of yet but I'm being tested for different things at this time. I'm interested in talking to anyone and everyone about anything and everything! I've never realized there were groups and I'm very happy that I found them. Can't wait to meet everyone. I just bookmarked your blog and I look forward to starting from the beginning and catching up with your journey. :-) I also have a surgery date of July 22nd but mine isn't set in stone (yet). So we may be having surgery on the same day!! My blog is just about my recent hearing loss and what it's been like to suddenly go completely deaf. I'm also writing about the CI process -- approval, testing, etc. I'm going to be getting bilateral CI's from Advanced Bionics. I'm nervous about the surgery and recovery period but I'm also excited too! I grew up with a hearing loss that was discovered when I was 4, and wore hearing aids for the past ...uh... 39 years. (wow!) I'm 43 now and just recently lost all of my hearing so my hearing aids have been retired and I'm lip reading now. My husband and I have been learning sign language and cued speech, though, and it's helping with the communication issues. I have 2 teenagers who are probably really happy that mom never tells them to turn their music down. Guest guest Posted June 29, 2008 Report Share Posted June 29, 2008 Hi Wendi! It's great to " meet " you. What an amazing coincidence that our surgery may be on the same day. That is just wild! So, you are going bilateral? That is awesome. That's what I wanted to do but my doctor is behind on the times and will only do one implant at a time. Sadly he's not even 100% pro bilateral implants which I disagree with adamantly. Thankfully, I know 2 people who have bilateral implants that he implanted. So, I do feel like I can use them aganist him if he tries to tell me no in the future! Haha. I do plan on getting my second implant done later.. The problem is I have some slight balance issues in my left ear which is something I worry about. Plus I do well with the hearing aid in the left ear so he says that it's not really a candidate. I disagree but it's okay.. I'll focus on the right ear for now and move on. I absolutely fear that if I wasn't going to get the surgery now I would wake up one day and the hearing aids wouldn't be able to help anymore....very much like your experience. I've been told all my life that I will most likely lose more hearing. According to my hearing tests I've remained very steady. However, I KNOW that in the past 2 years I've lost more hearing in my left ear even though the tests don't show that. I know it to be true. That's how I started the CI process. The hearing aids just couldn't help as much anymore. Plus I hate the digital hearing aids. They don't help me at all. I'm glad that you and your husband are finding ways to communicate. Sign Language and cued speech. Just think after you get the implants you should be able to hear again! Isn't that encouraging. Oh and you might warn the kids that you WILL be telling them to turn the music down! Haha. Please keep in touch. I will check out your blog. I really hope your surgery date will stay the same. Doing great but hated the first few days post activation. There are great tips in the archives and on the 1st the list has three emails you may want to be looking for. During my 30 year high school reunion a few weeks ago, one of my classmates commented that I was hearing better than she was! She also said I sounded better (I did not take it as an insult though). And I was a " wee bit " older than 29 at the time. Works great. Best wishes.
