I agree with Ellen. How many people or families of color would be comfortable

joining this group? Shoot, I'm a white woman & I wouldn't be comfy in a group

While we are fighting discrimination towards our dwarfism we also need to be

aware of discrimination based on race, gender, religion and sexual

orientation within LPA.

I may be wrong, but cracker is a derogatory term used for Caucasians, much

like the " N " word is used to hurt African Americans.

WOW, talk about someone having too much time on their hands to think up a new

definition for cracker.

Honestly, if someone came up to me and called me a cracker..I would laugh so

hard, then after about 10 mintues, I would regain composure and just shake my

head and say, " Boy have you got some major issues, do I look edible to you,

should I even be offended? "

Cracker...wow, that is going to baffle me for a long time...I've never ever

heard it used here in Southern California!

I looked up the word Cracker in the dictionary...I found this:

" Offensive. Used as a disparaging term for a poor white person of the

rural, especially southeast United States. "

I didn't know about this before. This is interesting to learn. I dont

hear that word around here...I didn't know about the " n " word until I

went to Florida 5 years ago. I don't hear that word around here

either.

People that haven't heard Cracker are weird. I have heard it for about 4

years now. I don't take it offensive at all. I think it is stupid and thats

that. Cracker is referring to a white person. White people usually don't

take offense to it unless they are real strong for their race.

I agree with . I think People aren't creative anymore, and

they have to borrow other words. I wouldn't be offended by something

like that myself. Because I'm a little silly sometimes, and if

someone called me a cracker…it would sound like quackers…so you get

the idea.

It's not weird to not be familiar with a certain word, Money. If you

look at the definition, it says in the southeast. I live in New

Hampshire and I'm from a small town. Every town and city, area have

their own slang words. It's IMPOSSIBLE to know all the slang words

and know what they mean. I think the word Cracker is SILLY and stupid

to be taken seriously as an offensive word. And apparently it's not

just a few people that aren't familiar with that word.

Ok, you've heard the word for 4 years…big deal…what about those years

BEFORE those 4? Would that make you weird?

Just some thoughts on them crackers.

Why would you think that " cracker " would only upset those white

people who highly identify with their race (By this I assume you mean

bigots)? My guess is you're a bit younger than me so I'll fill you in.

When the term was used more readily it was a " fightin' " word unless it

was used in fun between " crackers " . That's because, while the word is

race linked, when directed at a person in anger it was more of an

individual insult to one's intelligent and character.

In old rural communities the farmers would, after getting supplies

they needed for the week, sit around the " cracker " barrel, " pickle "

barrel or " pork " barrel in the general store and catch up on the goings

on in town and the surrounding area and to set up business transactions.

" Going out for coffee " serves that purpose now in rural areas. The word

derives from a legitimate activity engaged in by the the people it was

used against, so it didn't come out of thin air and has been used for 40

years or more so it does not denote the lack of creativity of a more

recent time frame.

The word was coined as an attack the farmer's way of life by

portraying these people as simpletons, lazy and unsophisticated. These

farmers worked their butts off all week long, sunup to sundown and

stayed afloat financially by using their wits and trading skills within

a small community. Because some " City boy " sees them sitting by the

' " cracker " barrel during the only break they get during the week and

because they're not talking about the latest paris fashions but rather

market prices on sow bellies, crops and livestock, they're called

simpletons and lazy. I think I would bristle a bit myself.

But, like many other words, the meaning has changed and mellowed

both with the passage of time and because people are ignorant of it's

true meaning to the southern farmer. In some cases the word has become a

symbol of pride because it has picked up an additional connotation that

links it with with pride in ones community.

I saw a show on TV not long ago called " The Competition. " One of

it's segment covers Mule Pulling. I thought, this is going to be stupid.

I turn out to be an excellent insight into just the kind of person that

would be a called cracker.
