Quite useful. Tell your doctors where to go for information! Guest guest
Hi! We've also been worried about the weight of our 18 month old, but I think you just need to look at each child individually. Our son doesn't look overweight, but he is in the 25% percentile in weight (23 lbs) but of course below the 5% (29 inches) in height. I think he just weighs more than other kids his height because his head is in the 50% percentile and his hands and feet are normal size for his age. Each child is different, have the Pediatrician take a look at him and see if s/he wants to change anything in the diet if your child seems to be gaining faster than he should given the rate of growth. Our Pediatrician just saw yesterday and thought he looked fine. At 15 months was 27 inches and 21 pounds. Guest guest
My daughter is 19 lbs. 8 ozs and is 27 inches. The dietician who follows her usually looks at her to see how she 'looks' in relation to height/weight. Also, even though Cailie doesn't have Achondroplasia, we use that chart to plot the height/weight issue. Hope this helps, etc. Beth (mom to Cailie, 18 mos, CAmpomelic Dysplasia)
Guest guest
, is 28 months old. At her two year check up she was 26 inches tall, and 17.6 pounds. She is now about 18 pounds. She wears 12 to 18 month clothing, and is in a size 3 shoe, also. We saw Dr i and Dr Ain at the Conference in July, and neither one even mentioned her weight. Our pediatrician isn't worried at all. She eats all day long, is constantly on the move. She started walking at 13 months, and now runs every where. Alot of Achon babies weight falls into their large heads. s' head is at the bottom of the chart(below average) for an achon her age, so there is some weight missing there. Also, since they don't grow very much, you don't want her gaining a bunch like an average baby or she will be overweight. Alot of achons have a problem with weight later in life, so Dr. i said he would rather see her a little under the chart than over. Guest guest
Our son, is 4 years old, and is about 30 pounds and 30 inches. He has a narrow chest and chunky tighs, I don't think he is over weight, it he was I know at least one of his doctors would be all over us about it. Guest guest
, was wearing 18 months to 2T when he was 2 1/2, her weight compared to her height sounds about right. correct weight for size > >Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 13:51:05 EDT > > > >From: MLVodenik@... > > > >I am so tired of people suggesting what a correct weight for my 15 month > >old > >is. Guest guest
I have twin 15 month old daughters with achondroplasia. Olivia is only 23 " and weighs 15lbs and Maggie is 22 1/2 " and weighs 14lbs. We frequent Dr. i's office. He said that they are doing just fine. Olivia eats anything and everything. I feel that children with achondroplasia work extremely hard with their motor development and have a tendency to burn most of their food intake. There are appropriate growth and weight charts out there for children with achondroplasia. Dr. i has given those to us and we passed them on to our pediatrician. Guest guest
I think that we should go with our " mother's instinct " when it comes to the weight vs. size issue, since there are so many variations within the dwarfism community itself when it comes to size, body shape, etc. Rosie is 28 " at FOUR and a half. I just try and use my common sense with her and figure she's going to always be small in comparison to other children with achondroplasia because of the Down syndrome (she seems to plot along steadily just UNDER the growth curves on the achondroplasia growth charts). When she was younger, her pulmonary doctor would get all doom and gloom when she DIDN'T gain weight. Now, she lectures about the hazards of apnea and obstruction when she DOES gain weight. I would be a freaking nervous wreck if I let it all get to me. YOU know YOUR child best.
