tranquilisers could become class A instead of C - misuse of drugs actFebruary 25 2010 at 11:50 PM

Labour MP Jim Dobbin, chairman of the all-party Parliamentary Group on Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction, said: "Thousands of people are addicted to tranquillisers and hundreds have died. We want these drugs seen as agents that people need to be warned about." It is now being proposed that all tranquillisers should be reclassified from class C to class A substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act which would mean users or suppliers could face prison.

The advisory council refused to look at the problem when it was asked in 2003. Minutes of meetings at that time obtained by the Sunday Express show former chairman of the council's technical committee, Prof Nutt, ruled an investigation was "likely to be ineffective".

We can reveal that Prof Nutt, who was sacked last year after claiming ecstasy was no more dangerous than riding a horse, has raked in tens of thousands of pounds in consultancy fees and grants from drug firms.
