Re: the Martha Effect

How timely your post is! In my conversation with that shrink last Friday, this

is one of the things he talked about. He said that he had learned a lesson early

in his career about jumping to a diagnosis when one of his patients said that

his neighbors were trying to kill him. He immediately assumed that the patient's

condition was deterioriating, made notes to that effect and changed the strength

of his meds. The patient consequently did not come in for several weeks and when

he did, his arm was in a cast and sling. The shrink asked what happened to his

arm. The patient said that his neighbor's teenage son and some of his buddies

had shot him in the arm with a .22 pistol. Turns out the teens had been

harrassing this guy for months and had previously thrown rocks and shot pellets

through his windows, set his back porch on fire, and pushed and punched him on

several occasions. As I've said before - you are not paranoid if they really are

out to get you. LOL

The Martha Effect is a process by which a belief is mistakenly

diagnosed as a delusion by a psychiatrist.

My son has " Paranoid " written on his hospital intake

sheet. They justify by saying, " He claims people were

taking about him behind his back " . Tell me what 13

year old, who is being bullied, and hears his bully

say, " we are going to get him " , Doesn't assume they

are talking behind his back. I got into a disagreement

with My sister-in-law, over something her Aunt said

about me. Can I say she dislikes me and says nasty

stuff about me when I am not there. Or am I jumping to

conclusions because I am paranoid?

When the Doctor at Shepard Pratt (and being a brit.

I laugh at that " pratt " thing everyday), wanted to put

Nick on Zoloft, after he was off all meds, and doing

very well, I refused. Doc stated I was unwilling to

help my son get better. Then the doctor wrote a report

saying he belived Nick needed to be Kept in the

hospital longer, because of his past history. We went

to court and had the record state how well Nick was

doing at the time the last report was written. We got

him home. I was accused of being manipulative, to get

my own way. I wish i hd know about the Martha

Effect back then.. Thanks for the info.

Maggs.
