Subject: The gym

Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 16:47:45 -0500 (EST)

This is dedicated to every woman who ever attempted to get into

a

regular workout routine. A must read!

Dear Diary...

For my fiftieth birthday this year, my husband (the dear) purchased a

week of personal training at the local health club for me.

Although I am still in great shape since playing on my high school

softball team, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it

a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal

trainer I'll call Bruce, who identified himself as a 26 year old

aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear.

My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started. The club

encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress.

Monday:

Started my day at 6:00 am. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was

well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Bruce waiting

for me. He is something - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling

white smile. Woo Hoo!!

Bruce gave me a tour and showed me the machines. He took my pulse after

five minutes on the treadmill. He was alarmed that my pulse was so fast,

but I attribute it to standing next to him in his Lycra aerobic outfit.

I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics

class after my workout today. Very inspiring. Bruce was encouraging as I

did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in

the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

Tuesday:

I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Bruce

made me lie on the floor and push a heavy iron bar into the air - then

he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but

I made the full mile. Bruce's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I

feel

GREAT!! It's a whole new life for me.

Wednesday:

The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying on the toothbrush on the

counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a

hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to

steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.

Bruce was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other

club members. His voice is a little too perky for early in the morning

and when he

scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest hurt

when I got on the treadmill, so Bruce put me on the stair monster. Why

the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered

obsolete by elevators?

Bruce told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some

other shit too.

Thursday:

Bruce was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his

thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being

a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes. Bruce took me

to work out with dumbbells.

When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the men's room. He sent Lars

to find me, then, as punishment, put me on the rowing machine - which I

sank.

Friday:

I hate that bastard Bruce more than any human being has ever hated any

other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic

little cheerleader wanna-be bastard. If there was a part of my body I

could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it. Bruce

wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you

don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the F**king barbells or

anything that weighs more than a sandwich. (Which I am sure you learned

in the sadist school you attended and graduated magna cum laude from,

you Nazi bastard).

The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition

teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach

or the choir director?

Saturday:

Bruce left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly

voice

wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing him made me want to

smash the machine with my planner. However, I lacked the strength to

even use the TV remote and ended up watching eleven straight hours of

the Weather Channel.

Sunday:

I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and

thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my

husband (the BASTARD) will choose a gift for me that is fun - like a

root canal or a hysterectomy.

I walk/jog 39-45 min 6 days a week, and three days a week go to the

gym and do 30 min on the treadmill with very high incline and do 45

min of weighs. also do 100 situps, 100 crunches, 100 leglifts (4

sets of 25 each) everyday. Clarice, mind telling me how many

calories you are consuming? if you are hitting it hard enough to

burn 1000 calories on that bike, everyday... you really need to be

careful and not cut too far back, say eat around 1800 calories a

day... (at least) what are you eating? anyone else here want to

comment on food when you are putting out this much energy with

exercise? I know I eat around 1800 cal a day on the days I don't go

to the gym and around 2000 on the days I do... sometimes more...

Clarice - I am impressed with your workout schedule! An hour on the bike at the

hardest program is dang good! I usually do 45 minutes a couple of times a week,

but am doing it at the lower end. Tell me this .... do you find yourself losing

weight using the hardest program? Just wondering......

I also use the weight machines 3 times a week. Lower body twice a week and

upper body once a week.

Wow! Are you sure you're not overdoing it? Is there a trainer at the gym you

can talk to to devise a safe plan for you?

> I only workout 90 mins a day thats

Sounds like a bit too much to me. Please, check with either a doctor or

trainer about it. Even exercises only an hour each day.

Clarice - the reason the scale may not be moving as much as you would like it to right now is that you are developing muscle. That is a good thing. Muscle burns calories and gets your metabolism running. This will ultimately get the pounds off and gone. As you said, your clothing is getting smaller and that is real good! Muscle takes up less space then fat does.

Check with the trainer and see what she thinks. But if you are enjoying your workout, are able to handle it and if your heart rate is where it should be - well I say go for it! You might find that you get days where you don't want to work as hard but that will all work itself out.

You did say that you haven't been to a doctor in a while. It might be a good thing to get a checkup just to see where you stand and talk to your doctor about the program you are following. It never ever hurts to have the doctor give you the okay for your plan!

I think you are doing great! You are doing something for you, your kids get watched while you are doing it and you are keeping busy! Keep up the good work.

Take Care,

I dont know how much calories I have a day I never really add it

up. I eat chicken all day dont know if thats bad but kind of a

habit for me. I eat chicken breast the big ones that you bye in the

packs well I eat one in the morning with dressing I pick at it then

I drink about 16ozs of apple juice take my vitamins and drink about

46ozs of water. I run around all morning doctors etc then go to the

gym at noon everyday. I do my 90 mins of workout burn up to 1000

calories then I leave sometimes shop or come home. When I get home

I eat chicken again always baked I will have it again with juice and

water and dressing and some broccoli on the side. Dinner just about

the same but maybe some corn just depends I'm often not as hungry as

you would maybe think. If I buy myself a snack I never finish it.

So thats what I eat all day I dont know how many calories are in the

chicken it doesnt say on pack. I know it may seem weired that I

only eat that but the truth is eggs, bread, bacon, anything like

that makes me feel sick and often I will get sick at night which I

hate, I dont make myself sick but the food will or it will keep me

in the bathroom all night which is worst. So I eat what my body can

handle. I could eat more chicken or I could eat more greens or

maybe more broccoli I thought I was fine but if you think I need

more let me know......Thanks Clarice Ps your workout is something

else it seems so much harder then mine. 100 push-ups and sit-ups

you must really be in shape i do 20 a set and ave to break lol. I

will be there soon not just yet I did cut back on the weight lifting

I'm trying to run now on the treadmill it's taking sometime but I'm

doing it it's just another goal for me and when I get to the point

that I want I will be so happy. Not really worried about the lbs I

know I'm buring fat and gaining muscle. If I only get to 200lbs

that will be fine as long as I'm fit if that makes sence...Clarice

Am I losing weight with the hardest program truth be told no lol. I

stoped losing weight or I lose slow now like a 1 lbs a week which

dont seem like much but I'm happy with it. To tell you the truth

when I finish that hr on the glider or bike on the hardest program

it makes me feel good and I know it's working my muscles. Most

important thing work up to it. First week I did light second medium

because you need to let you body get use to it. By the third week I

was good to go and so proud. I'm a big women I know this and I see

the small women working around and I wish it could be me but it's

not and may never be but I'm happy with just be able to do that bike

or run something you never see a big girl do. I lift but just what

I can handle 3 times a week I could lift more but right now I'm more

concern with cardio. I have muscle but feel like you will never see

it if the fat doesnt come off so thats why I push on the cardio but

the truth be told I'm not even that tired or worn out after the bike

or glider the running really gets me but that will take time. I

really feel I could do 2 hrs on the bike but that would be pushing

it and I know I would have to eat more for that. Beside I only have

90 mins to workout my kids are in the childcare center

there......Clarice

Well I do 90mins because thats how long the kids get to stay in

child care and its a break for me. I thought it was good. I mean

I'm big but I always feel good i worked out the whole time I was

sick and got over my cold in just a few days and felt like i could

take on the world. I thought my workout time was good because I'm

working myself like how they always say do. Now it may seem that I

do alot but I do this everyday and the more I do it the easier it

is. I didnt start at a hr I started at 10 mins thats no lie i

couldnt do more then 10 mins in Jan on the bike and i couldnt do the

glider at all. I have worked my way up and never do more then my

body can handle. I'm losing inches for sure because none of my

clothes fit but not losing lbs as fast but that doesnt worry me as

much. I havent seen a doctor, since I had my son and they told me

then that i was way over weight and needed to do something about it

they said that i would be close to 300 by the time I was 30. I will

tell you that it really hurt me being told such a thing and that I'm

really doing the best i can to be more fit then anything. My oldest

has autism and runs off like today ran off in the park towards the

lake a year ago I would of scream for someone to grab him since I

was to big to run after him. Today I was there right behind him. I

got my son!!! After I wasnt all out of breath but I felt great

knowing that I can do more for myself rather then call the next

person to get my children..........Clarice Ps i also have richard

simons but my kids dance under my feet while doing it lol. I will

ask the trainer if she thinks I'm over doing it. Heart rate on

machine says I'm good but i will ask ok I'll let you know.

Hi superwoman. :) Ok, you answered my question about how you go to the gym

for 90 min. per day with 3 kids. It sounds so nice to have a gym with child

care. That is my dream but not something we can budget for right now. My

next question is how do you limit yourself to a couple of chicken breasts

per day when you have to feed your kids? What do they eat? At least you

don't have to worry about hubby sniveling about having chicken again. :)

It's kind of nice when dh works late because I feed the kids something like

a tortilla, carrots, apple and yogurt and I can eat what I want. Dh prefers

a hot meal including some sort of meat or poultry every night. He's not

picky but he wants a substantial dinner, not something light.

I live in Houston with dh and daughters who are 6 and 3. Will your son go

to public school in the fall? My oldest is in full day kindergarten. My

little one stopped napping so I don't have a break every afternoon. She is

in mother's day out for a few hours on Tues. and Thurs. which helps but I

feel like I have to get exercise, errands, house remodeling, etc. done

during those few hours. Ack!
