Calvin " C.J. " Breakfield Jr. has had several run-ins with police, was thrown out

of public schools, has been put in and out of group homes and eventually was

diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia.

The parents of the 16-year-old accused rapist say for the past five years

doctors have treated him as a mentally ill patient.

Officials at Caddo Correctional Center seem to think otherwise. Prison

administration, with the assessment of a contracted psychiatrist, recently

determined the teen is sane enough to join the facility's general population. .

Last week, Breakfield was taken out of the men's mental health housing unit,

where he'd been since he was booked May 15, jail officials said.

" According to a report, (Breakfield) said he was suicidal and said he was going

to kill himself, " said Deputy Rick Farris, captain of security at Caddo

Correctional. " The first day, he went to mental health. And that is standard for

anyone who says they are going to harm themselves and/or (is) standard for

anyone who has done something drastic.

" But, in general, when they interview (the inmate), they will assess that

person's state of mind, " Farris said. " Calvin Breakfield was never diagnosed as

being mentally ill. "

His parents say the prison took him off the prescribed medications he was taking

at the time police arrested him in connection with the rape, robbery and beating

of an 81-year-old Shreveport woman May 5.

The medications include Wellbutrin, Abilify, Seroquel and Hydroxyzine, said

Calvin Breakfield, the teen's father.

The teen brought the same prescription drugs when he was processed at Caddo

Correctional, according to booking records that list items inmates have when

they enter.

Abilify and Seroquel are used to treat schizophrenia and/or manic episodes

associated with bipolar I disorder, according to a medical encyclopedia.

Wellbutrin is an antidepressant. And Hydroxyzine is used to treat anxiety

disorders and tension in stressful situations.

" I'm his father, and I know he has serious mental problems, " the elder

Breakfield said in a telephone interview. " He has been under the care of a

psychiatrist for at least five years, I know.

" I can't understand how they can make a determination in one month that differs

from what doctors have said over the past five years. It worries me because the

meds are what help control his behavior. "

Calvin Breakfield Jr. faces a life sentence if convicted of rape. He is accused

of asking the woman to use her phone, then forcing himself on her, beating her

with his fists and dragging her through the house. The woman then was raped and

robbed.

Breakfield also faces charges that he raped an 82-year-old woman in June 2005.

That assault also occurred in Shreveport's Caddo Heights neighborhood.

Similarities between the two cases and physical evidence at the scene link the

teen to the 2005 attack, police say.

" He's been in trouble for fighting, stealing bicycles, breaking windows or

something like that, but nothing this serious, " his father said.

The teen is in administrative segregation, a form of lockdown, at Caddo

Correctional because he threatened the staff, Farris said.

Shreveport attorney Andrepont, who represents Breakfield Jr., said it's

possible he could plead not guilty by reason of insanity. However, she hasn't

reviewed his medical records.

" Every time I see him or talk to him, he wants to know when he's coming home

because he doesn't understand these charges, " the teen's father said. " I just

say to myself, 'If what they are saying is true, I'll be dead when you come

home.' "
